AREA ROUNDUP

Marlington in control of EBC baseball race

LEXINGTON TWP. — Halfway through the league schedule, the Marlington High School baseball team is enjoying a nice cushion in the Eastern Buckeye Conference race.

The Dukes beat visiting Canton South 7-2 on Saturday to improve to 9-2 overall and 6-0 in the league.

That 6-0 EBC record puts them two games up on 4-2 West Branch. Every other league opponent has three or more losses.

“When we looked at our league schedule, we knew we had to take care of business the first half,” Marlington head coach Cody Jones said. “We knew Carrollton, Salem and South were going to be good. But we preach to our guys about not playing up or down to an opponent, not worrying about who’s across the field from us in the dugout. We just try to play our brand of baseball, which is throwing strikes, making the routine plays and putting the ball in play.”

A night after scoring 18 points in the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association Division I-II North-South Game at Olentangy Liberty High School, Connor Evanich swapped his sneakers for spikes and struck out 10 Wildcats in five innings to get the win on the mound. The 6-foot-4 right-hander allowed seven hits and one unearned run in improving to 2-0.

“We DH’d for him so he could just focus on pitching and he threw really well,” Jones said. “He had an effective start for us, five good innings, and then he was able to turn it over to Ian (Mills). Connor was good. That’s what we expect out of him.”

Luke Tortola’s two-out, two-strike single off South starter AJ Pierson in the first inning staked Marlington to a 2-0 lead. Tommy Skelding, Garret Odey and Danny Grimes all had run-producing hits as the day went on.

Marlingtons’ Drew Denham and Wyatt Dillon each went 2-for-4, with Denham scoring twice and Dillon once.

Pierson (1-2), a talented sophomore, took the loss for South (6-7, 5-3). Brady Noll and Blake Kennedy each had two hits for the Wildcats, with Kennedy scoring a run.

Manchester baseball throws second straight no-no

BREWSTER — Less than 24 hours after Owen Canter tossed a no-hitter on Friday against Orrville, Manchester’s Ethan Wright and Shawn Armstrong came back with a five-inning combined no-no Saturday at Fairless in a 14-0 Panthers win.

Canter struck out 16 batters in Manchester’s seven-inning 15-0 win against the Red Riders. Wright and Armstrong combined for nine on Saturday as Manchester improved to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the PAC-7. Wright struck out six in three innings, Armstrong three in two innings.

Cooper Briggs went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Panthers.
