The Jackson High School boys tennis team swept the two titles in the Canton Division I sectional tournament Saturday.

Alvin Altman won the singles title for the Polar Bears while the Jackson duo of Ryan Kelley and Lucas Immel won the doubles championship.

The top-seeded Altman won the sectional final 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 over second-seeded Dylan Wiles of GlenOak. In the third-place match, Blake Hood of Alliance defeated Jackson's Denil Joseph 6-0, 6-3. All four advance to the district tournament.

Kelley and Immel won the doubles title 6-0, 6-0 over a Wooster team. Jackson teammates Cole Bertram and Shiv Nagajothi finished four. Both of those Jackson doubles teams advance to districts.

In the Wooster Division II sectionals, the Central Catholic doubles team of Anthony Moauro and Michael Stangl finished second to advance to districts. They lost in the finals 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 to a St. Vincent-St. Mary team.

The district tournament for both divisions is May 19-21, at Springside Athletic Club in Fairlawn.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

MASON — The Walsh University baseball team finished an improbable run through the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament with an 8-5 victory over Ashland in Saturday’s winner-take-all championship. The win secures Walsh its first berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Walsh (30-21) came in as the lowest seed in the tournament. The sixth-seeded Cavs also had to regroup after losing to Ashland 8-6 earlier Saturday.

A four-run first inning in the championship game gave the Cavs a lead they never lost. Austin Marko capped the inning with a two-run homer.

Jacob Beachy had two hits for Walsh. Winning pitcher Nick Lallathin struck out four in three innings of relief. Brant Alazaus allowed just one hit in two innings and earned the save.

The Cavs won four of their five G-MAC Tournament games. They opened the tournament with a 4-3, 10-inning win over top-seeded Tiffin on Wednesday.

Walsh’s last national tournament appearance came in 2007 when the program was in the NAIA.
