Saturday's college roundup: UMaine baseball beats Albany to remain unbeaten in conference play

Apr. 8—Jeremiah Jenkins hit a two-run home run in the first inning, his 10th of the season, as the University of Maine baseball team beat Albany 12-1 on Saturday in Orono to remain unbeaten in America East play.

Jake Rainess was 3 for 5 with a home run, three runs scored an an RBI for the Black Bears, who improve to 14-11 overall and 8-0 in America East. Quinn McDaniel was 4 for 5 and scored five times, while Ryan Turenne added a solo home run in the fourth inning.

Caleb Leys pitched six innings, allowing one run on two hits, while striking out seven and walking one to earn the win.

Jason Bottari had two hits for Albany (3-19-1, 0-8).

SOUTHERN MAINE SWEEPS WESTERN CONNECTICUT STATE: Kyle Douin had three hits, four RBI and scored twice as the Huskies (8-12, 4-2 LEC) beat the Wolves (3-21, 0-6) 14-0 in the first game of a doubleheader in Gorham.

Douin and Jonathan Wilson each had two hits and the Huskies won the second game, 8-4.

BOWDOIN, TRINITY SPLIT: Ben McKenzie and Stephen Simoes had back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Polar Bears (11-6, 2-1 NESCAC) to a 2-1 win in the first game of a doubleheader against the Bantams (13-7, 3-3) in Brunswick.

Jack Mullen pitched seven innings, allowing one unearned run to earn the win for Bowdoin.

Trinity won the second game, 5-2.

COLBY SWEEPS BATES: Ethan Hillenberg was 3 for 4 with eight RBI and the Mules (14-6, 3-3 NESCAC) beat the Bobcats (10-9, 1-5) 23-4 to complete a doubleheader sweep in Lewiston.

Colby won the first game, 7-4.

SMCC SWEEPS BRYANT & STRATTON-SYRACUSE: Justin Colon finished the day with four hits and four RBI as the Seawolves (9-10) swept the Bobcats (1-9), 5-1 and 11-0, in a doubleheader in South Portland.

SOFTBALL

UMAINE, BRYANT SPLIT: Jasmine Gray singled in the winning run as the Black Bears (9-22, 2-4 America East) won the first game of a doubleheader with the Bulldogs (10-18, 2-5) 4-3 in Smithfield, Rhode Island. Bryant won the second game, 3-2.

BOWDOIN SWEEPS TRINITY: Lilly Armstrong hit a sacrifice fly and the Polar Bears (14-12, 7-5 NESCAC) beat the Bantams (7-9, 2-2) 2-1 in the second game to complete a doubleheader sweep in Brunswick.

Angeline Mayers had a grand slam as Bowdoin won the first game, 10-2.

ANNA MARIA SWEEPS ST. JOSEPH'S: The Amcats (12-11, 7-1 GNAC) scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning to finish a doubleheader sweep of the Monks (9-13, 4-2) with an 11-8 win in Marlboro, Massachusetts.

Anna Maria won the first game 8-2.

TUFTS SWEEPS COLBY: Keriann Slayton hit a two-run single as the Jumbos (21-1, 6-0 NESCAC) beat the Mules (12-8, 1-3) 2-0 to complete a doubleheader sweep in Medford, Massachusetts.

Tufts won the first game, 7-2.

BATES SWEEPS WESLEYAN: Madison Hollis was 3 for 4, with three RBI and the Bobcats (10-4, 4-2 NESCAC) beat the Cardinals (10-14, 0-6) to complete a doubleheader sweep with a 9-4 win in Middletown, Connecticut.

Hollis pitched seven shutout innings and Bates won the first game, 5-0.

SOUTHERN MAINE, UMASS-BOSTON SPLIT: Lauren Merrilll allowed just one hit to earn the win and drove in the winning run as the Huskies (7-11, 3-1 LEC) won 1-0 in the second game to earn a doubleheader split against the Beacons (15-5, 2-2) in Boston.

The Beacons won the first game 10-2.

CCRI SWEEPS SMCC: Ashley Klingberg and Casey Regine both had six RBI as the Knights (7-7) swept a doubleheader with the Seawolves (1-13), winning 17-2 in Game 1 and 11-2 in the second game, in South Portland.

MEN'S LACROSSE

ST. JOSEPH'S 16, NORWICH 12: Tim Goodfellow and Tiger Hopkins each had four goals and two assists as the Monks (6-7, 4-2 GNAC) beat the Cadets (4-9, 2-4) in Standish.

Xavier Michaud added three goals for St. Joseph's.

KEENE STATE 19, SOUTHERN MAINE 10: Rex Maccarini had six goals and four assists to lift the Owls (5-4, 3-0 LEC) past the Huskies (2-8, 0-2) in Gorham.

Nick James had four goals and two assists, while Schuyler Wetmore had four goals for USM.

NICHOLS 10, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 8: Cian Keohane had three goals and the Bison (7-5, 1-2 CCC) beat the Nor'easters (7-6, 1-3) in Biddeford.

Shea Fogarty, Ryan Hazard and Andrew Lawrence each scored twice for UNE.

AMHERST 16, COLBY 12: Tanyr Krummenacher had two goals and five assists as the Mammouths (8-2, 4-2 NESCAC) beat the Mules (2-7, 0-6) in Waterville.

Bayard DeMallie had three goals for Amherst. Jack Goller had three goals, while Nick Hassan had two goals and two assists for the Mules.

BOWDOIN 20, TRINITY 15: Patrick Fitzgerald had five goals and an assist as the Polar Bears (8-3, 4-3 NESCAC) beat the Bantams (5-6, 2-4) in Hartford, Connecticut.

Matt Ward added four goals and two assists, while Jason Lach had three goals and an assist for Bowdoin.

HAMILTON 15, BATES 6: Tim Sommer, Justin Pearl and Will Heher each had three goals as the Continentals (5-5, 3-4 NESCAC) beat the Bobcats (1-9, 0-7) in Lewiston.

Malcolm Klingbell had three goals and an assist for Bates.

SOUTHERN MAINE 15, EASTERN CONNECTICUT STATE 11: Rachel Shanks had seven goals and the Huskies (6-6, 2-0 LEC) beat the Warriors (2-7, 0-2) in Gorham.

Cierra Hill added three goals and an assist for Southern Maine.

TRINITY 22, BOWDOIN 8: Molly McGuckin had six goals and an assist as the Bantams (9-2, 4-2 NESCAC) beat the Polar Bears (4-7, 2-5) in Brunswick.

Fiona Bundy had four goals and an assist for Bowdoin.

BATES 12, HAMILTON 10: Shelby Howard scored four goals as the Bobcats (5-7, 1-6 NESCAC) beat the Continentals (4-7, 1-6) in Clinton, New York.

Caroline Taggart also scored twice for Bates.

COLBY 13, AMHERST 12: Julia Jardina scored with 5:17 left in overtime as the Mules (8-3, 4-2 NESCAC) beat the Mammoths (7-3, 3-3) in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Elizabeth Hennessey had four goals for Colby and Jardina added three.

ST. JOSEPH'S 18, ELMS 7: Lydia Dexter had five goals and four assists as the Monks (10-2, 8-0 GNAC) beat the Blazers (3-6, 2-6) in Chicopee, Massachusetts.

Shauna Clark added four goals and an assist for St. Joseph's.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 18, NICHOLS 3: Sydney Balotin and Barie Guertin both scored four goals as the Nor'easters (9-3, 3-1 CCC) beat the Bison (8-3, 0-3) in Biddeford.

MEN'S HOCKEY

HOBEY BAKER: Michigan freshman forward Adam Fantilli won the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, recognizing the top player in college hockey.

The Canadian played on the Wolverines' power play, penalty kill, took big faceoffs, and was on the ice in all end-of-game situations. He led the NCAA with 65 points, tying for first in goals with 30 and fifth in assists at 35.

The other two finalists for the award were freshman Logan Cooley and sophomore Matthew Knies, both of top-seeded Minnesota.
