Saturday's high school highlights: Cottrell leads BHS swimmers at Clinton Invite

Burlington High School sophomore John Cottrell won one event and finished second in another to lead the Grayhounds to a fifth-place finish in the 11-team Clinton Invitational boys swimming meet at Clinton Saturday.

Sterling, Illinois, won the team championship with 280 points and Dubuque Hempstead was second at 266. Burlington scored 105 points for fifth place and Keokuk was ninth with 35 points.

Cottrell won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.30, more than three seconds ahead of runner-up Dakota Dahlke of Muscatine. Cottrell finished second in the 100-yard butterfly in 54.5 seconds. Davenport Central's Kyle Hopewell won that event in 50.61.

Cottrell also helped two Burlington relay teams to fourth place finishes. Aiden Woodsmall, Will Davidson, Cottrell and Nathan Parks took fourth in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:49.64. There were 16 relay teams competing.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Cottrell, Edward Schroeder, Davidson and Parks finished fourth in 1:40.66. Sixteen teams competed.

Keokuk's Brendan Worster picked up two third place finishes — the 100-yard freestyle in 51.36 seconds and the 100-yard backstroke in 57.22.

PREP WRESTLING

WACO FINISHES 3RD: WACO High School had two individual champions and the Warriors finished third in the 12-team Regina Invitational at Iowa City.

Sigourney-Keota won the team championship with 227 points. Host Regina was second with 191 points and WACO came in third with 139 points, one point better than fourth place Tipton. Mount Pleasant, with one individual champion, finished 10th with 57 points.

WACO's Larz Smith and Louden Huisenga won individual championships.

Smith, at 138 pounds, defeated Sigourney-Keota's Reid Molyneux, 7-2, in the championship match. Smith had a first round bye, then pinned Davenport West's Hunter Strong in 1:26 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Smith won by medical forfeit over North Cedar's Nate Wood.

In the 145-pound division, Huisenga beat Regina's Carter Rios, 7-1, in the championship match. Huisenga, too, had a first round bye. He pinned Sigourney-Keota's D.J. Hammes in 1:28 in the quarterfinals and pinned Davenport West' Wyatt Hass in 3:06 in the semifinal round.

WACO's Gage Samo finished second at 106 pounds. He had a quarterfinal bye, then decisioned Tipton's Jaysen Johnson, 8-2, in the semifinals. He lost a 7-2 decision to Sigourney-Keota's Reanah Utterback in the finals.

WACO's John McLaughlin finished fourth at 113 pounds, Cainan Lovan was sixth at 170 pounds and Tim Willits finished fifth at heavyweight.

Mount Pleasant's Carson Coleman recorded two falls and two decisions to win the 126-pound division. He pinned Tipton's Wyatt Ham in 0:52 and Johnston's Xander Kauffman in 0:46. He won a 5-3 decision over Fairfield's Zach Westercamp and a 3-2 decision over West Branch's Luke Guseman.

Mount Pleasant's Bowen Davis finished third at 138 pounds and Gannon McNamee was fourth at 120 pounds.

BOYS BASKETBALL

KEOKUK 36, CLARK COUNTY 28: Diego Garcia and Zach Meyers scored nine points each to lead the Chiefs to victory at Keokuk.

M.J. Davis added eight points.

Keokuk (2-3, 0-3 Southeast Conference) plays at Fairfield (1-5, 0-3) Monday night.

WACO 49, WINFIELD-MOUNT UNION 41: Hunter Hughes scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Colton Leichty scored 11 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Warriors to an SEI Superconference crossover win at Wayland.

Also for the Warriors, Simeon Reichenbach scored 10 points, Reece Oswald scored seven points and Cody Graber scored six points.

Cam Buffington scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Wolves, while Abram Edwards scored seven points and had nine rebounds. Also for the Wolves, Konnor Wade scored nine points, Jake Edwards scored eight points and Andrew Brown scored seven points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

WAPELLO 57, NORTHEAST 52: Four Arrows scored in double figures in a non-conference win over Northeast at Wapello.

Wapello's Tatum Wolford led all shooters with 19 points and she had four rebounds and four assists. Serah Shafer and Lindsy Massner each had 12 points and Jacie Hoeg added 10. Shafer also had six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Massner blocked three shots.

Alyssa Fowler led Northeast with 14 points. Emma Kjergaard had 12 and Aubrie Kruse added 11.

W-MU 52, WACO 25: Winfield-Mount Union coasted to an interdivisional win at Wayland.

W-MU's Bradie Buffington led all scorers with 17 points. The Wolves' Melina Oepping scored nine and Jobey Malone had seven. Ellah Kissell led WACO with 13 points. Katie Leichty scored five and Grace Coble added four.

Winfield-Mount Union (8-2, 5-1 North) plays at Louisa-Muscatine (6-0, 5-0 North) Tuesday. WACO (5-4, 3-3 South) hosts Danville (3-4, 2-4 South) Tuesday.
