Saturday's high school scores: Somerset Berkley, Westport baseball advance; Case wins big

SOMERSET — It's on to the next round for the Somerset Berkley baseball team.

The 29th seeded Raiders took care of business on Saturday, getting the best of 36th seed Northampton, 9-2, in a Division II preliminary game at Somerset Berkley Regional High School.

SBR (14-7) heads to the Round of 32 and will face fourth seed North Attleboro on the road Monday at 4 p.m.

Benjamin Oliveira went 5.2 innings for the win for the Raiders, allowing just two hits, two runs, walked five and fanned 12 batters. He also had three hits at the plate, including a pair of doubles and four RBI.

Jonathan Lynch threw one and one-third innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Dean Gobeil also drove in a run in the victory. SBR did not commit a single error in the field. Tyler Costa had 13 chances in the field — the most on the team.

Westport 2, Smith Academy 1

The 32nd Wildcats won a tight one at home late against 33rd seed Smith Academy.

Shawn Lavoie improved to 4-0 after pitching 2.2 innings of relief for Westport (11-8). He allowed no hits, two walks and fanned four batters.

Starter Cameron Leary pitched 4.1 innings, yielding a hit, an unearned, walked five and fanned eight batters. He was also 1-for-2 with a run scored and two stolen bases.

Other top hitters include Connor James (triple, RBI), Luke Finglas (two hits, RBI), Owen Boudria (double), and Ben Boudria (hit, walk).

Down 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Leary walked and stole second. James tripled him in to tie the game. Finglas then grounded out to shortstop scoring James to take the 2-1 lead.

The Wildcats face top-seed Hopedale on Monday at 4 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Joseph Case 19, Quabbin 2

The fourth-seeded Cardinals opened the postseason with a mercy-rule victory over 29th seed Quabbin in a Division IV Round of 32 contest.

Olivia Silva and Emera Marcello led the offense for Case (16-5) with three hits each. Brooke Orton and Abby Sirois each contributed a pair of hits.

Hailey Berube went the distance, striking out eight and scattering just four hits.

The Cardinals will host either Monomoy Regional or Blackstone-Millville in the Sweet 16 on Tuesday.

BOYS TENNIS

Durfee 4, Haverhill  1

The 31st seeded Hilltoppers won their first playoff match in nearly two decades after taking four of five sets from 34th seed Haverhill at home in the Division I preliminary match.

Chris Panchley (6-3, 6-2) and Will Rumsey (6-3, 3-0 retired) each won their singles match for Durfee (15-4; 6-2 in SEC).

Jack Fitzgerald and Chrispin Sokol won in straight sets at first doubles, 6-4, 6-2 while Jesse Tamba and Colin Fleet won their match at second doubles, 6-4, 6-2.

"Excellent team win, first tourney win in a long time for Durfee," Hilltopper head coach Eric Gomes said.

Durfee will face No. 2 seed Lexington on Monday at 4 p.m.
