Jan. 21—GIRLS BASKETBALL

* Lakeview 49, Conneaut Area 34 — At Stoneboro, Emma Marsteller fired in 24 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and had three steals as the Region 1 Sailors (10-4) picked up a win over Region 5 CASH (8-6).

Conneaut Area led 24-21 at halftime, but coach Gary Burke's Lakeview squad rolled in the second half by outscoring the Eagles 28-10.

Kyndra Seddon added 10 points for Lakeview and Kelsey Seddon contributed eight points, seven rebounds, and three steals.

Lainie Harrington had 10 points for CASH and Hannah Brady bucketed nine.

* Union City 37, Reynolds 26 — At Transfer, coach Doug Dorio's Region 1 Raiders fell to 4-10 with a loss to the Region 2 Bears (7-8) on Saturday.

UC led 13-5 after eight minutes, but Reynolds rallied to take a 18-15 lead at halftime. The Bears pulled away for the win by outscoring the Raiders 22-8 in the second half.

Cathryn Reynolds scored 14 points for Union City and Brooke Van Tassel added 13 markers.

Lea Miller had eight points for Reynolds and Julie Wade contributed seven.

* Laurel 43, Greenville 34 — At Greenville, the Trojans fell to 12-2 with a loss to a tough Laurel team that improved to 14-1.

Laurel led 15-10 after eight minutes and 27-19 at halftime. The Spartans held a slim 16-15 scoring edge in the second half.

Senior Regan Atkins fired in 19 points for Laurel and reached 1,000 career points, Danielle Pontius scored 11, and Tori Atkins drained a pair of treys for six points.

Anna Harpst led Greenville with 12 points and two assists, Reese Schaller had eight points and eight rebounds, Grace Cano contributed eight points, nine rebounds, and three steals, and Josie Lewis added three points and two assists.

Class 3A Laurel's only loss of the season came on the opening night of the season on Dec. 2 with a 48-44 setback to Class 5A Mars (12-2) at the Slippery Rock Tipoff Tournament.

* Butler 49, Sharpsville 33 — At Butler, the Devils fell to 5-9 with a loss to Class 6A Butler (9-7).

Tori Kimpan had an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double for Sharpsville, Breanna Hanley scored seven points and grabbed nine boards, Chasie Fry added seven points and four assists, and Macie Steiner contributed six markers.

BOYS BASKETBALL

* Union City 57, Reynolds 51 — At Transfer, the Bears completed the girls/boys doubleheader sweep of Reynolds.

The game was tied 29-all at halftime and UC led 40-39 after three quarters of play. The Bears put the game away with a 17-12 scoring differential over the final eight minutes.

Bryce Drayer led Region 3 Union City (5-10) with 20 points, Josh James buried five treys and finished with 17 points, and Wyatt Post chipped in eight markers.

Hayden McLaughlin also had five three-pointers and 17 points for Region 2 Reynolds (4-10), Jake Williams scored 13, PJ Winkle contributed nine points, and Andrew McCLoskey eight.

* Gen. McLane 71, West Middlesex 50 — At Edinboro, Logan Anderson drained a program-record eight treys en route to 32 points as the Region 7 Lancers (8-5) defeated the Region 2 Reds (8-6).

Tyler Banks added nine points for GM, which fired in a total of 12 three-pointers in the non-region affair.

Gio Rococi had another big game for West Middlesex with 25 points and Richie Preston scored 13.

* North Allegheny 76, Grove City 51 — At Wexford, the Eagles (6-8) fell to Class 6A Tigers (6-8).

Stats were not reported to The Herald.

* Slippery Rock 72, Wilmington 34 — At "The Rock Box" in Slippery Rock on Friday, Josh Gordon fired in 20 points as the Rockets (1-1, 6-7) rolled in the Region 5 encounter.

Levi Prementine added 13 points for Slippery Rock and John Sabo and Josh Book contributed 10 points each.

Anthony Reed led the Hounds (0-2, 2-11) with 11 points.

INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

Hickory's Luca Bertolasio had a big day Saturday at the YSU High School Meet at the Watson and Tressel Training Site in Youngstown.

Bertolasio placed first in the long jump (22-0 1/2) and also captured the 60-meter dash (7.08).

Also for the Hornets, Keenan Scullin took fifth in the 60 with a time of 7.19 and Caden Riethmiller was fifth in the 3200-meter run in 9:57.97.

Two Hickory relay teams placed seventh: Eric McCrimmon, Riethmiller, Kieran Scullin, and Vincent Uberti in the 1600 relay (3:53.73) and Mason Coldsmith, Scullin, McCrimmon, and Jacob Harmer in the 3200 relay (9:23.96).

In the high jump, Logan Stanford (5-0) placed sixth and Khalil Houston (5-0) was seventh.

For the Hickory girls, the 3200-meter relay team was eighth in 11:43.73. The team was comprised of Brooklyn Beighley, Sophia Emmorey, Ayren Lauer, and Ava Shellenbarger.

Also competing was West Middlesex's AnnaSophia Viccari, who raced to a third-place finish in the 800 with a clocking of 2:29.79. Mercer's Willow Myers took third in the 1600 in a time of 5:14.79.

WRESTLING

Mercer VFW Tournament

Sharpsville captured the team title on Saturday at the 10th annual Mercer VFW Tournament.

Three Devils wrestlers captured individual titles while three others placed second.

Ethan Springer won the 121-pound championship, Alex Rueberger grabbed gold at 127, and Jonathan Bissell copped the 133-pound crown. Caullin Summers (152), Josh Divens (172), and David Moyer (189) took second place for the Devils.

Springer decisioned AJ Barnes of Sheffield, 4-2, in the finals, Rueberger posted an 8-2 decision over Mercer's Carter Wise, and Bissell won with a 5-3 decision over Brody Beck of Cambridge Springs.

Summers dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to Mason Gourley of Clarion in the finals, Divens suffered a 5-1 loss to Jessie Orbin of Chartiers-Houston, and Moyer was pinned by Matt Lobdell of Sheffield in 2:45.

Sharon standout Mike Mazurek won the 285-pound title with a 5-0 decision of Clarion's Josh Beal.

Slippery Rock's Braiden Reich finished runner-up at 215 pounds after being pinned by Coudersport's Gavyn Ayers in 2:11.
