Saturday's HS highlights: Claymont, Hiland girls hoops earn big wins; CV bowlers win OVAC crowns

Raechelle Miles and Bailey Eddleman scored 14 points apiece and Emma Woodward added 11 as host Claymont defeated neighboring Indian Valley 45-38 in an Inter-Valley Conference South Division girls basketball clash Saturday afternoon.

The Mustangs improved to 7-8, 2-5, while the Braves dropped to 1-15, 0-9.

Indian Valley led 8-7 after the first quarter, but Claymont took a 18-17 lead at the half and was on top 29-25 heading to the final frame.

Ashton Doak led Indian Valley with 14 points and Macy Lancaster added 10.

The 1981 Claymont Lady Mustangs State Championship basketball team was honored on Saturday.

The team plus the top 20 all-time scorers were recognized between the JV and varsity games.

Hiland 44, Tusky Valley 19

Aila Miller scored 14 points and Ashley Mullet added 10 as Hiland avenged its only IVC loss with an emphatic win over Tusky Valley in an IVC South showdown win at the Reese Center.

Hiland (12-7, 8-1) led 11-5 after the opening quarter and 18-8 at the half before breaking the game open in the third quarter with a 15-1 burst and taking a 33-9 lead into the final frame.

Tusky Valley falls to 13-3, 9-1.

Strasburg 58, Malvern 32

Madi Becker scored 19 points and Rylee Thomas added 17 and seven rebounds to lead visiting Strasburg to an IVC North win at Malvern.

The North-leading Tigers (15-2, 9-0) led 17-12 after one quarter, 32-24 at the half before expanding their lead to 49-29 after three quarters of play.

Lanie Bower led Malvern (9-7, 5-2) with 17 points and Maddie Powers added 11.

Sandy Valley 47, Ridgewood 36

Abbey Parker scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds as Sandy Valley improved to 12-5 overall and 6-4 in the IVC South with a win over visiting Ridgewood.

Jordan Parker and Alli Neary each added 11 points for the winners.

Kelsie Stephens collected 19 points to lead the Generals (5-11, 2-8), who suffered a road loss in Inter-Valley Conference action.

Union Local 63, Harrison Central 13

Union Local won its third straight Buckeye 8 title by defeating Harrison Central.

The Jets led 26-3 after the first quarter 43-10 at the half outscored the Huskies 15-0 in the third to take a 58-10 lead into the fourth quarter.

Northwest 45, Fairless 37

Host and league leading Northwest knocked off Fairless in a Principals Athletic Conference contest at Canal Fulton.

Lily Bottomley and Carly Spradling led Northwest with 13 points apiece, while Gianna Kuhn also made double figures with nine.

The Indians led 10-8 after one quarter, 17-14 at the half and 29-20 going to the final frame.

Kam Kondrach led Fairless with 13 points and Grace Lyon added 11.

Morgan 47, River View 41

Katie Hook scored seven of her team-high 21 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Raiders (11-6, 9-4) get past the host Bears (2-15, 0-12) in a league crossover.

The teams were tied at 11 after one quarter, 20 at the half and 31 through three quarters.

Odessa Smith added 11 points and Sydnee Krigbaum scored nine for Morgan.

Aaliyah Better collected 16 points and Alivia Spaulding had 12 points to pace River View.

Maysville 51, Coshocton 31

Jayda McGarvey scored 15 points and Parhker Nichols added 10 points to pace the Panthers (2-14, 2-10) in MVL play.

Olivia Blust scored six for Coshocton (1-12, 0-9).

Boys basketball

Central Catholic 50, Conotton Valley 36

Zander Sabin scored 18 pints and Kayden Crosier added 12 to lead Tuscarawas Central Catholic to an IVC North win at Conotton Valley.

Central (9-7, 7-2), who also got eight points from Jordan Cherry, led 18-10 after one quarter of play, 29-18 at the half and 47-28 going to the fourth quarter.

Maddox Walter and Gaige Galigher led the Rockets (5-10, 1-8) with eight points each.

Western Reserve Academy 48, Hiland 39

Braden Appelhans scored 10 points and Trey Autrey and Tyler Linhardt added nine points apiece as Western Reserve Academy topped Hiland to give the Hawks their second loss of the season.

Western Reserve Academy led 13-11 after one quarter, 25-14 at the half and 46-19 going to the final frame where Hiland outscored WRA 20-2.

Sammy Detweiler led Hiland (12-2) with a game-high 17 points and Grant Miller added eight.

Tuslaw 68, Sandy Valley 50

Ty Pratt poured in 25 points, Gavin Buchanan added 13 and Nate Frascone put in 10 as Tuslaw recorded a non-conference win over Sandy Valley at Magnolia.

The Mustangs led 11-10 after the opening quarter, 34-18 at the half and 49-31 heading to the fourth quarter.

Ben Petro led Sandy Valley with 19 points and Kaiden Mastri added 12.

Harrison Central 59, John Glenn 58

Visiting Harrison Central picked up a big non-League win over John Glenn at The Fishtank.

New Lexington 55, Coshocton 50

Lukas Ratliff and Bentley Hanson scored 15 points apiece, as the host Panthers (9-6, 4-5) held on for a MVL Small School Division win.

New Lex held a 12-9 lead after one on 3s by Ratliff and Hanson, and six points by Hanson in the second had the Panthers up 25-22 at the half.

Zach Jennings scored six of his team-high 16 points in the third to put the Redskins (4-6, 3-4) up 39-37 entering the fourth, but Ratliff and Hanson both knocked down a pair of 3s in the final stanza to lead the Panthers to the win.

Isaac Dick added eight points and Hunter Kellogg collected five points, six rebounds and four assists for New Lex, which made 9 of 18 3s and 19 of 40 field goals. The Panthers also had only six turnovers.

Jacob Lonsberry totaled 14 points and Alec Laaper chipped in nine for Coshocton, which made 20 of 39 field goals and 4 of 11 3s. The Redskins held a 20-14 edge on the boards, but committed 12 turnovers.

Bowling

OVAC Championships

The Conotton Valley bowling programs swept the Class 1A-3A Ohio Valley Athletic Bowling Championship held at St. Clair Lanes in St. Clairsville.

The CV girls won with 3,406 total as Mackenzie Willoughby won the individual crown with 684 series (182-247-255) and Daphne Stuber was second with a 648 (258-179-211).

Katie Schaar posted a 508 (156-172-180), Kylie Galigher rolled a 499 (147-212-160) and Chloe Blick bowled a 455 (155-169-131) for the winners.

Barnesville was second in the team standings with a 2,860.

The CV boys won as the Rockets finished in the top three spots led by Bobby Brennan's 727 series (279-225-223). Nolan Caldwell was second with a 643 (242-175-226) and Robert Myer was third with a 638 (226-207-205).

Spencer Bernhardt's 594 (209-163-222) and Jayden Rolli's 523 (178-202-143) aided the Rockets win.

Wrestling

Berkshire Battle for the Belt

Dover placed sixth out of 14 teams at The Berkshire Battle for the Belt Tournament.

Top six placers follow: Wilber Mejia-Ajanel (113): 4th; Christian Gomez-Sanchez (120): 3rd;Pedro Garcia (132): 3rd; Diego Ramirez (138): 2nd; Alex Heaton (157): 5th; Brandon Kiser (175): 1st; Noah Tristano (285): 3rd

Jack Osborn (126) - 3 wins, Joey Tristano (285) - 3 wins & Khai Metcalf (144) - 2 wins also put together good days despite finishing outside the top six.

Peg Leg Scuffle

The Tuscarawas Valley finished fourth at Garaway's Peg Leg Scuffle.

TV placers were Tyler Wiseman (120, 2nd), (Wilson, 132, 1st), 1osh Owens (144, 3rd), Logan Postlethwait (165, 3rd), Andrew Congdon (175, 3rd) and Colton Selinsky (2nd, 190).

West Holmes Invitational

West Holmes placed third out of 15 teams at their own West Holmes Invitational.

Placing individually for the Knights were 2nd - Brady Smith, Mason Taylor; 3rd - Tucker Kaufman, Elisha Baldridge; 5th - Conner Varnes, Collin Gardner; 6th - Aaj Roberts, Grady Toye, Noah Tish

Highland won the meet with 271 points with Buckeye second with 215.5 and the Knights were third with 157.5.

Robin Drumm Classic

River View and Coshocton had some strong outings during the Robin Drumm Classic at Heath High School.

Cruz Mobley won the title at 215 pounds, as the Black Bears scored 120 points to place sixth out of 15 teams.

Tucker Mounts (120) and Travin Berry (165) came in second, Brayden Melear (113) and J.D. Herron (175) finished fifth and Jonathan Jones (190) and Jacob Averitt (215) took sixth for the Black Bears.

Coshocton was 10th with 84 points, as Kobe Rust (157) placed second to lead the Redskins. Dalton Brock (132) came in third, Zane Stanton (215) was fifth and Caiden Griffiths (120) finished sixth.

Sandy Valley Triangular

Sandy Valley hosted Dover and Ridgewood in a triangular meet Thursday night.

The Cardinals came away with two victories on the evening defeating Ridgewood by a score of 54-18 and Dover 37-30.

In the Dover dual, Jake Kandis had a huge pin that changed the entire complexion of the dual, and Matt Gentry made a statement with a 12-6 win over his highly state ranked opponent.

Individually, Brandon Boggs, Evan Natale, Jake Kandis, Brody Marks, Bam Moyer, Matt Gentry, and Wyatt Moyer went 2-0, while Seth McCauley and Alec Trent went 1-1.

Swimming

River View Invitational

River View's boys were first and the girls were fourth at their own invitational.

The boys 200 Freestyle Relay team broke their own record with 1:43.36.
