Saturday's Maine college roundup: Adrianna Smith lifts UMaine to women's basketball win

Jan. 7—Adrianna Smith scored 34 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the University of Maine women's basketball earned its third straight win, holding off the New Jersey Institute of Technology, 69-63, in an America East game Saturday in Newark, New Jersey.

Sera Hodgson added 12 points for Maine (7-8, 3-0 America East), which led 36-24 at the half.

Kenna Squier had 14 points and Aria Myers scored 10 for NJIT (7-8, 2-1).

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 91, NICHOLS 52: Faye Veilleux scored 18 points as the Nor'easters (9-4, 5-1 Commonwealth Coast) beat the Bisons (2-9, 1-5) in Biddeford.

Julianna Tracey added 14 points, Keagan Dunbar scored 12 points, and Kaitlyn Santos had 10 points and nine rebounds for UNE.

ST. JOSEPH'S 86, RIVIER 51: Angelica Hurley had 20 points, 11 rebounds and six assists as the Monks (9-3, 4-0 GNAC) beat the Raiders (7-7, 4-2) in Standish.

Logan Brown added 12 points and Jayne Howe chipped in with 10.

UMASS DARTMOUTH 78, SOUTHERN MAINE 65: The Corsairs (7-6, 3-1 Little East) jumped out to a 26-7 lead after one quarter and cruised past the Huskies (4-7, 2-3) in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

Vanessa Vaughan led USM with 23 points. Amy Fleming finished with 19 and Tamrah Gould scored 10.

TRINITY 49, BOWDOIN 43: Emma Wax scored 18 points, and Reilly Campbell added 11 and 14 rebounds to lift the Bantams (13-1, 2-0 NESCAC) past the Polar Bears (10-3, 1-1) in Hartford, Connecticut.

Jess Giorgio led Bowdoin with 13 points.

COLBY 59, WESLEYAN 54: Caroline Smith had 23 points and eight rebounds as the Mules (5-7, 1-1 NESCAC) beat the Cardinals (5-8, 0-2) in Middletown, Connecticut.

Gabrielle Hemenes added 12 points and Lydia Mordarski had 11.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

NICHOLS 100, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 61: Jakigh Dottin scored 20 points as the Bison (8-5, 4-2 Commonwealth Coast) beat the Nor'easters (2-11, 0-6) in Biddeford.

Jayden Thornton scored 28 points for UNE.

SOUTHERN MAINE 77, UMASS-DARTMOUTH 74: Cody Hawes and Clay Kuhn each hit a layup in the final minute to help the Huskies (9-5, 3-2 Little East) beat the Corsairs (3-9, 2-2) in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

Hawes finished with 20 points and Kuhn had 12. Chance Dixon led the Huskies with 21 points.

ST. JOSEPH'S 80, RIVIER 64: Nicholas Curtis was 6 for 9 from 3-point range and finished with 23 points as the Monks (7-5, 3-1 GNAC) beat the Raiders (2-12, 0-6) in Standish.

John Paul Frazier added 12 points, while Ashtyn Abbott had 11 off the bench.

TRINITY 73, BOWDOIN 58: The Bantams (13-1, 2-0) took control with a 19-3 run to open the second half and defeated the Polar Bears (6-8, 0-2) in Brunswick.

Afamdi Achufusi scored 13 points for Bowdoin, while James McGowan chipped in with 12.

WESLEYAN 79, COLBY 59: Nicky Johnson had 28 points and seven rebounds as the Cardinals (7-5, 1-0 NESCAC) beat the Mules (12-2, 0-1) in Waterville.

Will King scored 23 points and Max Poulton 10 for Colby.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY

WORCESTER STATE 6, SOUTHERN MAINE 3: The Lancers (8-5) scored four goals in the second period to break away from a 2-2 tie against the Huskies (6-8) in Gorham.

USM got goals from Amelie St-Amant, Olivia Stewart and Madison Chagnon.

HAMILTON 3, COLBY 0: Nancy Loh scored twice as the Continentals (9-2, 5-1 NESCAC) beat the Mules (8-2, 2-2) in Clinton, New York.

Mandy Busky made 26 saves for Colby.

CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 8, BOWDOIN 1: Casey Chesner tallied four goals as the Camels (7-2, 5-1 NESCAC) beat the Polar Bears (6-6, 1-6) in New London, Connecticut.

Gia Massari scored for Bowdoin.

MEN'S HOCKEY

MAINE 4, ALASKA ANCHORAGE 3: Cole Hanson scored on a Ben Poisson feed in overtime to lead the Black Bears (8-9-2) past the Seawolves (4-13), completing a weekend sweep in Orono.

Poisson, Luke Antonacci and Michael Mancinelli also scored for Maine.

AMHERST 3, COLBY 0: Matt Toporowski notched a pair of power-play goals as the Mammouth (7-3-2, 6-1 NESCAC) blanked the Mules (7-4, 5-2) at Waterville.

Andy Beran stopped 22 shots for Colby.

HAMILTON 6, BOWDOIN 0: Six players scored for the Colonials (6-6, 4-3 NESCAC) in a win over the Polar Bears (8-2-1, 4-2-1) in Brunswick.

Bowdoin's AJ DiChiara made 15 saves.

BABSON 3, SOUTHERN MAINE 2: Andrew Holland scored midway through the third period to lift the Beavers (9-4-2, 4-2-2 NEHC) over the Huskies (2-10-1, 1-7-1) in Gorham.
