Saturday's Maine college roundup: UNE wins football opener

Sep. 2—Jarrett Henault connected with Shane Laporte for a pair of touchdown passes in the first half, and the University of New England held on for a 17-10 win over Coast Guard in a football season opener Saturday in New London, Connecticut.

UNE led 17-0 at halftime but needed a late defensive stand, as Coast Guard tried to drive for a tying touchdown in the closing minutes.

Robert Inniss opened the scoring with a 21-yard field goal in the first quarter. A good punt return by Trey Snowden set up Henault's 13-yard TD pass to Laporte on the next UNE possession.

Henault then capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive with a 5-yard pass to Laporte early in the second quarter.

Henault finished 11 of 17 for 99 yards. Eugene Jordan was the leading rusher for the Nor'easters, gaining 63 yards on 15 carries.

UMASS DARTMOUTH 35, HUSSON 14: Dante Avile-Santos threw four touchdown passes and ran for a touchdown, leading the Corsairs (1-0) past the Eagles (0-1) at North Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

Elijah Garnett rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown for Husson. Nic Visser passed for 160 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

QUINNIPIAC 3, MAINE 2: Rebecca Cooke scored two goals and Paige LaBerge had one as the Bobcats (3-1) raced to a 3-0 lead and held off the Black Bears (3-1-1) at Hamden, Connecticut.

Saylor Clarke scored twice for Maine, both assisted by Madison Michaud, late in the second half.

SPRINGFIELD 2, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 0: The Pride (1-0) got first-half goals Kaitlyn Suller and Kristina Kyle to beat the Nor'easters (1-1) in Springfield, Massachusetts.

UNE keeper Anna Flaherty made nine saves.

MEN'S SOCCER

THOMAS 4, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 2: Gabriel Fortuna broke a 2-2 tie with 7:47 remaining as the Terriers (1-1) beat the Nor'easters (0-2) in Biddeford.

Fortuna's goal came 10 minutes after UNE's Brendan Crichton tied the game.

Thomas grabbed a 2-0 lead on two first-half goals by Eric LaBrie, the first on a penalty kick. John Upton answered for UNE late in the first half.

Micky Woodrow added a late goal for Thomas.

FIELD HOCKEY

MIT 3, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 0: Paige Forester scored two goals as the Engineers (2-0) rolled past the Nor'easters (0-1) in Biddeford.

Lyndsay Pych made seven saves for UNE.
