Saturday's Maine college roundup: UNE cruises past Nichols, 31-12

Oct. 15—Jarrett Henault threw three touchdown passes to Mikey Brennan, and the University of New England matched its school record for football wins in a season by defeating Nichols 31-12 in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game Saturday in Dudley, Massachusetts.

UNE (4-2, 2-1 CCC), in its fourth varsity season, equalled its victory totals from 2021 and 2019. The Nor'easters have four games remaining.

Brennan's first TD catch — a 25-yarder in the second quarter — gave the Nor'easters a 17-7 halftime lead. Henault and Brennan then connected on 22- and 53-yard scoring plays in the fourth quarter.

Wide receiver Shane LaPorte also threw a touchdown pass — 3 yards to Jack Piller in the first quarter.

BATES 21, BOWDOIN 14: Colton Bosselait opened the scoring with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Hayes, then rushed for two TDs as the Bobcats (2-3) beat the Polar Bears (1-4) in Lewiston.

Bosselait made it 14-0 with a 12-yard run in the second quarter. After Bowdoin's Andre Eden scored on a 10-yard run in the third, Bosselait answered with a 60-yard touchdown.

COLBY 17, AMHERST 12: Matt Hersch passed for 150 yards and a touchdown and led Colby (3-2) with 58 yards rushing on seven carries as the Mules beat the Mammoths (0-5) in Waterville.

Colby grabbed a 7-3 lead on an 11-yard run by Keon Smart early in the third quarter. Issac Anderson caught an 8-yard TD pass from Hersch to make it 14-3, and Lowell Carr added a 28-yard field goal early in the fourth.

HUSSON 38, CURRY 26: Nic Visser passed for four touchdown and rushed for another, leading the Eagles (3-4, 2-1 Commonwealth Coast) to a win over the Colonels (3-4, 1-2) in Milton, Massachusetts.

Visser hooked up twice with Russ Walker (42 and 10 yards) and also threw TD passes to Jon Bell (39 yards) and Christian Walker (3 yards). Visser's 2-yard scoring run with 3:45 left clinched the victory.

Visser was 18 of 24 passing for 261 yards, with two interceptions.

MEN'S HOCKEY

BENTLEY 5, MAINE 1: Josh Latta's tiebreaking goal started a three-goal second period that carried the Falcons (1-2) past the Black Bears (1-2) in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Harrison Scott added a pair of goals as Bentley overcame an early 1-0 deficit, following a goal by Maine's Thomas Freel at 5:51.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY

LIU 1, MAINE 0: Maggie Culp's unassisted goal with 8:18 remaining gave the Sharks (2-5) a win over the Black Bears (4-3) in Orono.

LIU goalie Tindra Holt made 32 saves. Maine's Brooklyn Oakes finished with 21 saves.

ST. JOSEPH'S 2, LASELL 1: An unassisted goal by Rion Dos Santos with 1:15 remaining gave the Monks (10-3-1, 9-1 GNAC) a win over the Lasers (4-8-3, 2-5-3) in Newton, Massachusetts.

Austin Ward also scored for St. Joseph's.

BOWDOIN 4, HAMILTON 0: Julian Juantorena, Matthew Braver, Dylan Reid and Ronaldo Cabral scored as the Mules (9-1-2, 4-1-2 NESCAC) cruised past the Bulldogs (8-1-3, 4-1-3) in Waterville.

Harry Cooper, Minseo Bae and Mateo Pacelli each had an assist. Bowdoin keeper Michael Webber finished with four saves.

SOUTHERN MAINE 0, R.I. COLLEGE 0: Hayes Estrella made four saves for Southern Maine as the Huskies (3-4-6, 0-3-3 Little East) battled to a scoreless draw with the Anchormen (2-6-4, 1-3-3) in Gorham.

COLBY 1, CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 0: Ethan Fabricant scored in the 60th minute and Matt Morin made seven saves as the Mules (5-2-7, 2-2-5 NESCAC) edged the Camels (6-5-2, 2-5-1) in Waterville.

TUFTS 0, BATES 0: Nico Hessel made six saves for Bates as the Bobcats (5-4-3, 1-4-3 NESCAC) fought to a scoreless draw against Tufts (5-2-5, 2-2-4) in Lewiston.

WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 1, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 0: Sean Lanzillo's goal at 18:23 was all the Golden Bears (7-5-3, 4-2 Commonwealth Coast) needed to top the Nor'easters (0-12-2, 0-5) in Biddeford.

Tristan O'Hagan made four saves for UNE.

SOUTHERN MAINE 3, RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE 0: Catriona Gould, Julia McKenna and Aly Veilleux scored, and Breanna Atwood made five saves as the Huskies (13-1-0, 6-0 Little East) shut out the Anchorwomen (2-8-2, 1-5-1) in Providence, Rhode Island.

ST. JOSEPH'S 1, ALBERTUS MAGNUS 1: Madison Michaud scored the tying goal midway through the second half as St. Joseph's (6-7-1, 6-3-1 GNAC) earned a draw against Albertus Magnus (6-4-4, 4-3-3) at New Haven, Connecticut.

BOWDOIN 2, HAMILTON 0: Samaya Bernardo scored both goals and Alex Arndt made 10 saves as the Polar Bears (8-3-1, 3-3-1 NESCAC) defeated the Continentals (5-3-4, 2-3-4) in Brunswick.

BATES 2, TUFTS 1: Elizabeth Patrick scored twice to lead the Bobcats (4-6-2, 1-5-2 NESCAC) past the Jumbos (8-3-1, 4-3-1) in Lewiston.

CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 2, COLBY 0: Jamie Scarpantonio and May Johnson scored as the Camels (8-4-1, 4-3-1 NESCAC) downed the Mules (4-9, 0-9) at Waterville.

MK Marshall made three saves for Colby.

WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 3, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 1: Allison Bruehwiler broke a 1-1 tie 14 minutes into the second half as the Golden Bears (9-4-1, 4-1-1 Commonwealth Coast) beat the Nor'easters (7-4-3, 2-1-3) in Biddeford.

UNE's Marie Hoehner opened the scoring with a penalty kick in the 19th minute.

SOUTHERN MAINE 10, UMASS DARTMOUTH 0: Samantha Ellis scored three straight goals in the first half, Brooke Carson chipped in with two goals and an assist, and the Huskies (11-5, 8-1 Little East) trounced the Corsairs (2-10, 0-7) in Gorham.

Hannah Banks, Ginny Twitchell, Jordan Cummings, Chloe Arsenault and Adelle Surette each added a goal.

ST. JOSEPH'S 3, ST. JOSEPH (CONN.) 1: Maya Waryas recorded a hat trick to power the Monks (10-6, 7-2 GNAC) past the Blue Jays (1-12, 1-7) at West Hartford, Connecticut.

Abbie Jacques and Megan Quirion each had an assist. Kassidy Collins made two saves for the shutout.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 6, GORDON 0: Kate Lindmark and Shelley Tremblay each tallied a pair of goals to help the Nor'easters (8-7, 5-0 Commonwealth Coast) beat the Fighting Scots (2-10, 0-4) in Biddeford.

Grace Bazin and Sarah Padellaro also scored.

BOWDOIN 2, HAMILTON 1: Third-quarter goals by Jill Cloonan and Georgie Coetzer lifted the Polar Bears (8-4, 3-4 NESCAC) over the Continentals (8-4, 4-4) in Brunswick.

CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 4, COLBY 1: Kendall Arnold scored three goals and Bridget McGann added a goal and an assist as the Camels (3-9, 1-7 NESCAC) beat the Mules (5-7, 1-7) in Waterville.

TUFTS 2, BATES 1: Kylie Rosenquest and Ashley Zolin scored to lead the Jumbos (10-3, 7-1 NESCAC) past the Bobcats (7-6, 3-5) at Lewiston.
