Sauer, Texas Tech snap slump with sweep of WVU

Kenna Sauer had 10 kills, helping Texas Tech snap an eight-match losing streak Saturday by beating West Virginia 25-16, 25-18, 25-17 in Big 12 volleyball action at United Supermarkets Arena.

Reagan Cooper and Brooke Kanas added seven and six kills, respectively, for Tech (15-12, 4-10), which won for the first time since Oct. 12. Reese Rhodes had team highs of 30 assists and seven digs, and Karrington Jones had five blocks.

Bailey Miller had 10 kills for West Virginia (7-21, 0-15).

LCU men's basketball

BETHANY, Okla. — Adokiye Iyaye scored 17 points and Tyler McGhie and Javon Jackson backed him with 16 points apiece as No. 12 Southern Nazarene beat No. 16 Lubbock Christian University 66-57 Saturday.

Southern Nazarene (2-1) made 12 of 23 3-point goals and shot nearly 54 percent from the field. The two programs, former conference rivals in the NAIA, met for the first time since 2012 before both moved to NCAA Division II.

Rowan Mackenzie, Kurt Wegscheider and Kendall Dow scored 11 points apiece for LCU (1-2), and Mackenzie came up with five steals.

The Chaparrals host Arlington Baptist (0-2) at 6 p.m. Monday at the Rip Griffin Center.

LCU cross country

DENVER — Chloe Trull finished 81st out of 174 runners Saturday at the NCAA South Central Region meet, leading the Lubbock Christian University contingent.

The LCU women finished 20th in the team standings and the LCU men 22nd.

Trull ran the 6-kilometer course in 24 minutes, 29.50 seconds, leading the Lady Chaps for the second time this season. Usual LCU pacesetter Madelyn Merrell finished 100th in 24:55.10, and Sky Sena was close behind in 25:09.30.

LCU's Hailey Lowery (25:42.80) placed 121st, Sydnei Orozco (27:11.50) finished 148th and Sheyla Vilca was 154th.

Colby Sandoval led the LCU, running 97th out of 164 with a personal record time of 34:25.90 in the 10-kilometer race. Next for the Chaps were Carlos Barraza (34:33.90) in 104th, Hagen Sage (35:42.60) in 125th and Tristan Young (36:34.00) in 141st.

WBU women's basketball

WAXAHACHIE — Jenna Cooper-Jackson had 19 points and eight assists, leading No. 11 Wayland Baptist to a 69-59 victory against Southwestern Assemblies of God in a Sooner Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Kynnan Shields scored 15 points and Taryn Shultz 11 for Wayland (4-2, 1-1).

Neeley Tilley-Bedick led SAGU (2-4, 1-1) with 20 points.

SPC women's basketball

MIDLAND — Makiyah McCollister and Abby Cater scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, and top-ranked Trinity Valley Community College beat No. 24 South Plains College 58-41 Saturday in the Midland College Classic, defeating the Lady Texans for the second Saturday in a row.

Vitoria Carvalho scored 11 points for South Plains (2-5), which shot 29 percent from the field and lost its fifth game in a row.

SPC men's basketball

LEVELLAND — Ismail Habib poured in 26 points, Elijah Tate scored 19 and South Plains College squeezed out an 83-81 home victory Saturday against Dallas College-North Lake.

Christian Coleman and Malek Abdelgowad added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for South Plains (6-1), which has won five in a row.
