Saugatuck to play Black River in district finals - High school sports rewind

Saugatuck defeated Lawton 5-2 in district semifinal soccer action on Tuesday afternoon.

Alyvia Downer scored twice for Saugatuck with Iris Kuipers, Jenn Schock, and Emma DeBoer adding one apiece.  Kuipers, Erin Moerler, and Adele Nieuwsma recorded assists in the game, with Nieuwsma finding the scorer twice.

Kennedy Gustafson stopped four shots in goal to record the win.

In the other semifinal, Black River topped Hartford 8-0. Lily LaBurn and Ella Sligh each recorded a hat trick.  Kendra Munoz and Bethie Bensinger each scored a goal.  Assists went to Mae Pasatta, Anneke Hackney, Munoz, Nataleigh Meiste, Sofia Castellanos, and Sligh.

Olivia Hayes made one save for the shutout.

Saugatuck moves on to play Black River in Friday’s district final at Hartford.

SOFTBALL

Allendale 13, Zeeland East 7

Zeeland East fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 13-7 loss to Allendale on Wednesday.

Despite the loss, Zeeland East did collect eight hits in the high-scoring affair, but Allendale notched 17 hits.

Katie Carlson took the loss for Zeeland East. She tossed six innings, allowing 17 hits and 13 runs while striking out three and walking one.

Ella Hathaway and Carlson both managed multiple hits for Zeeland East. Hathaway,was also tied for the lead on the team with two RBIs.

Hamilton sweeps Middleville

The Hawkeyes took two games from Middleville on Tuesday afternoon.

In the first game Hamilton came away with a 4-1 win, with Madie Jamrog striking out 11 in the compete game, only allowing three hits.  Alyssa Morgan led the offense for the Hawkeyes, going 2-for-3 and scoring twice. Taylor Oosternik had two RBIs and two stolen bases.

In the second game Hamilton came away with a 17-3 mercy-rule win. Jamrog pitched all three innings, allowed four hits and two earned runs while striking out seven hitters.

Megan Williams and Kyra Kleinheksel each added three hits in the win, with Williams driving in three runs. Taylor Oosterink went 2-for-2 with three RBIs as well. Raya VanderZwaag hit a three-run home run.

"It was good to get back on the field after nine days off.  We saw a good pitcher in game one and that was good for us.  Madie Jamrog was really good in the circle today.  Offensively, we had great performances from hitters up and down the lineup.  We will need that moving forward," said Hamilton coach Mark Behnke. "Taylor Oosterink, Kyra Kleinheksel, Alyssa Morgan and Megan Williams were solid in game two and that is great to see...they've been solid all year.  We ran the bases well and put pressure on them when we needed to.  We have one more game this season on Thursday at FH Eastern before we will see Unity Christian at 10 a.m. Saturday."

BASEBALL

St. Joseph 3, Holland 2

The Dutch lost the pre-district game at home.

Hamilton 8, Hopkins 0

In their final regular season contest, the Hawkeyes scored eight runs on 11 hits.  Blake Thomas had three hits including a double, Alex Welscott added two hits, Garrett Kaiser drove in two runs with a hit and Michael Marshall tripled.

On the mound, four Hawkeyes combined for the shutout striking out 12 and walking three while allowing only three hits.  Hamilton returns to action in the district semifinals Saturday morning at 10 against South Haven.  The district games will be played at Holland Christian

Jenison 11, Zeeland East 7

Zeeland East lost a non-league game to Jenison on Tuesday by a score of 11-7.  Easton Remick takes the loss on the mound in relief for Zeeland East.  The Chix committed six errors on defense allowing only three earned runs in the game.  Max Salas, Trevor Raade, Remick and Nick Williams combined to strike out 13 batters and only allow five hits.

Offensively, Zeeland East tallied 10 hits in the game.  Easton Remick, Brenston Brown, Aidan Jaworowski and Jace Fenlon each had two hits.  Remick, Fenlon, and Austin Keur all added doubles
