Baby sent to hospital after Saugus firefighters respond to two fires less than two miles apart

Saugus firefighters responded to two fires in houses located less than two miles apart from each other Saturday night.

Both 590 Lincoln Avenue and 16 Denver Street were populated by firefighters at the same time just after 10 p.m. Saturday night.

The Saugus Fire Department says they received a call for smoke in the basement of the Denver Street home at 8:54 p.m. Fuel fed the basement, causing it to spread up a wall.

Just over half an hour later, crews also raced to Lincoln Avenue to deal with the reported fire there. This “led to a difficult situation for all involved coordinating Mutual Aid as companies responding to Denver St were redirected to Lincoln Ave,” the Saugus Fire Department said in a statement.

The two houses are located 1.6 miles apart, according to Apple Maps.

Between the two fires, more than a dozen people were displaced. One infant was transported to Mass General Hospital for observation.

At both scenes, firefighters deployed ladders up to the roofs.

Fire crews from Melrose, Malden, Lynn, Medford, Revere, Winthrop, Chelsea, Stoneham and Wakefield assisted the Saugus firefighters.

No injuries were reported.

The Saugus Fire Department has not announced a cause for either fire.
