SAULT STE. MARIE – The Sault Blue Devil football team was recently awarded with All-State Academic status for Division 3 by the MHSFCA.

The honor is handed out to just four schools in each division.  Trenton, Lowell, and Mt. Pleasant were the other Division 3 teams in the state to receive the award.

“I'm really proud of our guys for this honor,” Sault football coach Scott Menard said.  “Our athletes work really hard in the classroom as well as their sports.  It's really nice to see them get some recognition for that work.”

The top 11 grade point averages on the team were submitted to the association, which created a 3.94 GPA for the Sault, which was good enough to be in the top four.

The only other Upper Peninsula school to receive All-State Academic status was Munising in eight-player, Division I

The Sault also had several players named to the All-Conference team of the Northern Michigan Football Conference Legends Division.

Guard Adam Horrigan , tackle John Burke, and running back Ryver Reckeghem were selected on the offensive side of the ball, while linebacker Kadin Lujan and defensive end Callen Campbell were chosen on defense.

In addition, Burke and Campbell were named to the MHSFCA Division 3 All-Region team.  Burke was also selected to the All-State team.

Burke was also selected as an Associated Press Division 3-4 first team All-State recipient this season. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound offensive lineman is committed to Central Michigan University to play football.
