CADILLAC – The Sault Blue Devil girl’s basketball had a bad second quarter on Saturday afternoon and it cost them as the Blue Devils fell 46-36 to the Brighton Bulldogs in the Cadillac Showcase.

The Sault held a one-point lead, 13-12 heading into the second period, but got outscored 13-5 in the second frame and trailed 25-18 heading into the break. The Sault posted a 12-9 advantage in the third quarter but was held to single-digit scoring again in the fourth as Brighton won the final frame 12-6.

Brighton took advantage of its chances at the free throw line, hitting 13-of-14, while the Sault got to the line just nine times, making five. The Bulldogs were also hitting from the three-point line.  They knocked down seven threes in the game, while the Sault hit three shots from beyond the arc.

Claire Erickson was the only Blue Devil player in double figures with 13 points, while Laura Innerebner finished with nine.

The Bulldogs were led by Mary Capple who led all scorers with 15 points.

The Sault, 6-2, will travel to Gaylord on Tuesday.

Sault nets road win over St. Ignace

ST. IGNACE – The Sault girls basketball team notched a Straits Area Conference road win on Friday night, downing the St. Ignace Saints 45-20.

The Sault took control of the game early, putting up 15 points in the first quarter and holding the home team to just two.  The story was much the same in the second frame as the Sault outscored the Saints 11-2 to take a 26-4 lead into halftime.

This home-and-home series typically goes a long way in determining the winner of the conference, but with the Saints being so young this year, the Sault leaned on its experience and cruised through the second half for the win.

Claire Erickson led the Sault with 11 points, and Laura Innerebner was also in double figures with 10.  All of the Sault starters saw limited action due to the score and the fact that the Devils were playing in Cadillac the following day.

Jillian Fraser led the Saints with eight points.
