Rudyard slips past Cheboygan

CHEBOYGAN – When the Rudyard Bulldogs were walking off the court after beating the Cheboygan Chiefs 55-47 on Tuesday night, the ‘Dogs probably didn’t think they’d be asking their hosts for a ride home, but that’s exactly what happened when the team found itself stranded in town.

“Our bus broke down at McDonalds after the game,” Rudyard coach Jimmy Suggitt said after the game.  “And Cheboygan’s AD Jason Friday gave us a loaner bus so that we could get home safely.  That was a class act all the way.”

The Bulldogs didn’t show any signs of breaking down in the first quarter as they got out to an 11-7 lead.  By halftime, that lead would double to eight points as Rudyard went into the break leading 24-16.

“We got up by as many as 14 points, but we had some foul trouble,” Suggitt said.  “They got back in it in the fourth and played the foul game and we were able to hit our free throws down the stretch.

The Bulldogs hit 14-of-18 free throws in the final quarter.

Cam Peterson led the team with 17 points, while Aiden Bickel and Jesse Zeeryp each chipped in with nine.  Jack Cifelli scored six points and also led the team in rebounds with eight.

For Cheboygan, Kaleb Goodrich led the way with 16 points, while Dylan Balazovic was also in double figures with 10.
