Sault High introduces new assistant principal

SAULT STE. MARIE — The Sault Ste. Marie Area Public Schools Board of Education promoted a teacher to assistant high school principal during a recent board meeting.

During the board's meeting on Sept. 12, the district officially hired Scott Menard as the new assistant principal for Sault Area High School and Career Center.

This decision comes after former assistant principal Jeanine Sherman was promoted to principal in July.

“He has 31 years of teaching experience and has been teaching with us for many years,” said Superintendent Amy Kronemeyer. “We thought he would be a really good fit, he knows a lot of students and is very level-headed.”

Menard is originally from Sault Ste. Marie and was once a student at Sault High himself. While attending high school, Menard was on several sports teams including football, baseball and basketball. He graduated from Sault High in 1985.

After graduation, Menard attended Lake Superior State University for two years before transferring to Central Michigan University. He graduated from CMU with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education in English and a minor in physical education. He would later return to CMU and earn his master’s degree in athletic administration.

Menard began his teaching career in 1991 when he began teaching English for all high school grades at Engadine High School while also coaching football, track and basketball. In 1997, Menard returned to Sault Area High School, this time as a teacher instead of a student.

Since then, Menard has taught English classes to students in ninth through 12th grades, specializing in 10th grade American literature. He has also coached for several teams at Sault schools, including middle school boys basketball, freshman boys basketball and freshman girls basketball. He is currently the coach for the varsity football team and the varsity girls track team.

District officials said one reason he was chosen for the position is that the district recently hired several new teachers — including six teachers introduced during the meeting on Sept. 12. With his experience, officials believe Menard will be be a good mentor for the younger, less experienced teachers.

“As more teachers are reaching retirement age, we have more younger instructors coming into the profession and I think he’ll be a really good mentor for new teachers that are coming on board,” said Kronemeyer.
