SAULT STE. MARIE —  Charlie Brown of Sault Ste. Marie was presented with the Unsung Hero Award by the Chippewa County Credit Union on June 13.

The Unsung Hero Award is meant to give thanks to individuals who have contributed their service to the community. The award program began in 2021 with four winners picked each year from a list of locals who were nominated for their commitment to the community.

Brown was born and grew up on a farm in Soo Township in 1946 and has lived in the Soo all his life. He was president of his class in the Soo Township School in 1965, where he was a state representative for Sault Ste. Marie in Future Farmers of America. He later attended Lake Superior State University.

Brown is married to his wife Cathy and together they have two children, Aimee and Tony, and three grandchildren.

After school, Brown became a firefighter and EMT for several years and worked as a Boy Scout scoutmaster.

Currently, Brown sits on the Chippewa County Fair Board and is the superintendent of the tractor events at the fair. Brown is most recognized by the community for his business, U.P. Tire.

Brown is 76 years old but continues to work at U.P. Tire and the Chippewa County Fair because he enjoys doing the work he does for the community.

“I do it because I like it,” Brown said. “I like the people and being a part of these groups. Hopefully, I add to them.”
