Sault softball wins two against Redettes
SAULT STE. MARIE — Sault High softball notched a pair of non-conference wins over the Marquette Redettes Friday at Locey Field.
The Blue Devils won the first game 10-0. Danica Bergeron pitched a one-hitter over five innings, striking out five and walking none for the shutout.
Paris Kagarise, Hannah Maurer, Lucy Huskey, Gussy Smith had two hits apiece, while Hailee O’Connor and Gabby Killips added one hit each for the Blue Devils. Smith had a triple, while Huskey and Kagarise added doubles, among the extra-base hits.
The Blue Devils scored in every inning, starting with two runs in the first off a 2-RBI double from Huskey.
“We played real well against Marquette again defensively and our pitchers Danica Bergeron and Gabrielle Killips were outstanding in both games,” Sault coach Lisa Schulte said. “We also were able to really get our bats going as well, which helped us generate more runs with people in scoring position. That has been a focus point this year. We are getting better at driving those runners in, but still have some work to do.
“All in all though I'm proud of our progress as a young team so far this season and the senior leadership we are getting from Paris Kagarise and Audrey Smith has been awesome.”
The Blue Devils capped the sweep by beating the Redettes 7-2. Gabby Killips limited the Redettes to two runs on five hits over six innings, striking out nine and walking none.
O’Connor went 3-for-3, Audrey Smith was 2-for-3, while Kagarise, Gussy Smith and Abbie Church had one hit each for the Blue Devils.
Sault High (9-10-1) resumes action at Cheboygan on Friday. The Blue Devils also play host to Brimley at 1 p.m. Saturday at Locey Field.
