SAULT STE. MARIE — After having two members of the girls senior class sign basketball Letters of Intent, Hannah Maurer did her own thing and recently signed with Davenport University of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to play softball.

“I just felt really comfortable with the coach,” Maurer said of her decision.  “She came to watch my summer team play a few times and talked to me a little bit and it just seemed like it would be a really good fit for me”

The coach wasn't the only determining factor however.  Maurer visited the Davenport campus and found it to her liking, along with the facilities.

“I went down there for a visit and I really liked it there,” she said.  “Everything was right there and the fields were really nice too.  Class sizes were small and the other girls on the team were all really friendly and excited to have me come play there.”

Maurer played over the summer for the Mid-Michigan Bolts and, combined with her high school career, made an impression that was enough for Davenport to extend an offer shortly after watching her play.

“It feels really good,” Maurer said of the signing.  “It's really rewarding to know that I'm going to have an opportunity at the next level.”

In two years of varsity high-school softball, Maurer has been an offensive juggernaut for the Blue Devils, posting a career batting of .436.  She has also racked up 86 total hits, 65 runs batted in, and 10 home runs.

Hannah has been a tremendous bat in our lineup and a key piece to our emerging outfield talent the last couple of years,” Sault High coach Lisa Schulte said of Maurer.  “I'm really looking forward to seeing what she accomplishes this year as I know she has set her goals pretty high.  The entire coaching staff and her teammates are very proud of Hannah and cannot wait to watch her play at the next level.”

As much as Maurer wants this for herself, she also wanted to acknowledge her parents and how impactful they have been in her decision-making process.

“My parents have been really supportive and have been a big part of this process,” Maurer said.  “My dad would take time every morning to go hit with me and they were both willing to do whatever it took for me to become a better player.”
