Saults drops pair against SAC champion Chiefs

CHEBOYGAN — Sault High dropped a pair of Straits Area Conference softball games at Cheboygan Tuesday.

The Chiefs capped an unbeaten season within the conference and improved to 22-7 overall.

In the opener, the Chiefs beat the Sault 8-2. The Blue Devils scored one run in each of the first two innings, but that was all they could generate against Cheboygan pitcher Libby VanFleet.

Lucy Huskey hit a double and triple, while Audrey Smith had a triple for the Blue Devils. Gussy Smith, Hannah Maurer, Danica Bergeron, Hailee O’Connor and Gabby Killips added one hit each.

Bergeron pitched six innings and gave up seven earned runs on 11 hits, while striking out one and walking three.

VanFleet pitched all seven innings for the Chiefs and allowed two runs on eight hits, while striking out 14 and walking none.

VanFleet and Marley Couture both hit two doubles, and Amelia Johnson also had two hits for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs finished the sweep with a 21-9 win over the Sault in Game 2. The Blue Devils generated 14 hits, led by a 4-for 4 effort from Hannah Maurer which included a home run, double, two singles and five RBIs. Gussy Smith, Huskey, Audrey Smith and O’Connor added two hits each, while Paris Kagarise and Killips had one hit each.

Killips worked 5 1-3 innings and absorbed the pitching loss. Bergeron also pitched 1 2-3 innings.

Zoey Chamberlain, Cesley Stranaly and Jenna Webber had three hits apiece for the Chiefs.

Sault High (12-13-1) is scheduled to host Petoskey for a doubleheader Thursday.

The Blue Devils also host a Division 2 district tournament next week at Locey Field. On Tuesday, May 31, Cheboygan plays Marquette at 4 p.m. in the Sault. The winner advances to face Escanaba in the district semifinal on Saturday, June 4.

Sault High plays host to the Kingsford Flivvers in a district semifinal at 1 p.m. on June 4. The district final is set for 3 p.m.
