Savannah Morning News, Savannah State to host panel on Tripwire podcast, Thiokol explosion

Join the Savannah Morning News and Savannah State University on Wednesday, March 29, at 6 p.m. for an event detailing the Tripwire podcast and its investigation into the 1971 Thiokol plant explosion that killed 29 people in Woodbine, Georgia.

The podcast, which is available online at SavannahNow.com and on podcast platforms, looks at the circumstances leading up to February 3, 1971, a day that has become lost in the Georgia history books.

On Feb. 3, 29 people, predominately Black women, lost their lives when a fire started on the assembly line of the Thiokol plant where workers were building trip flares for the Vietnam War effort. The fire ran the gambit of the line and ignited a room filled with munitions, sending an explosive shock that could be felt as far as Jacksonville, Florida. In the decades since, the tragedy has faded from memory until the efforts of the Thiokol Memorial Project brought the story and the sacrifice of the women involved back to the forefront.
