Savannah police arrest man for homicide in connection with domestic dispute over weekend

A domestic dispute over the weekend at the 900 block of East 33rd Street ended in a murder.

Vernita Johnson, age 57, is the 14th homicide within Savannah this year — the third in as many days.

When Savannah Police arrived on the scene at 10:35 a.m. on Sunday, they found Vernita Johnson suffering fatal injuries from a gunshot wound. According to an SPD press release, homicide detectives conducted interviews and charged Jeffery Johnson, 59, with murder. The relationship between Vernita and Jeffrey Johnson was not made clear.

Johnson has been transported to the Chatham County Detention Center.
