Save this Section V football information; swimmers headed to D1 schools

Welcome high school sports fans to the latest Varsity Voices newsletter.

Democrat and Chronicle staff writers James Johnson and Marquel Slaughter, plus Messenger Post sports editor Bob Chavez share what's happening on and off the fields and courts in the greater Rochester region.

This week, we give you some information to keep so you are ready once sectionals start.

Brighton, Webster have Division I swimmers

A couple of returning All-Greater Rochester girls swimming and diving athletes have already made their college commitments.

Brighton senior Mingna Xu, the reigning AGR swimmer of the year, will swim at Cornell University. She starred in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly last fall.

Webster senior Claire Gorton, an AGR returner who stars in the freestyles, chose Niagara University. Gorton swam her first meet Tuesday, winning the 500 free in 5:24.27.

"She was very happy with the visit," Webster coach John Doerner said.
