He said it was difficult to find help immediately after the massive explosion.

"We didn't know what to do, we were in a bind, I didn't know where to take my wife, there was no red cross nor any civil defence," he told Reuters on Wednesday (August 5).

Officials did not say what caused the blaze that set off the blast.

The intensity of the blast threw victims into the sea and rescue teams were still trying to recover bodies.

Many of those killed were port and custom employees and people working in the area or driving through during rush hour.

The blast at the warehouses storing highly explosive material was the most powerful in years in the Lebanese capital, already reeling from an economic crisis and a surge in coronavirus infections.
