Sharing content on Instagram is fun—until it's not. If you're looking to delete an Instagram account (or maybe just deactivate it for a while), it's totally okay to take a break from social media. In fact, sometimes, a social media hiatus good for us!

How do you permanently delete an Instagram account?

If you're looking to permanently delete an account on Instagram, you can do so either in the app on your phone or on another device via mobile browser or by accessing Instagram.com on your computer.

How to delete Instagram on the app

If you're using the Instagram app on a mobile device, start by clicking your profile picture icon in the bottom right-hand corner. This will bring you to your profile. Next, hit the three lines in the top right-hand corner, then click "settings."

Scroll down to "account." Toward the bottom of this page, you will see the option "Delete account." From there, the Instagram app will offer you a prompt—Deactivate account or Delete account.

If you prefer to deactivate your account, you should know this is a temporary option. After deactivating, your Instagram account will be accessible again once you log in. For the duration that your IG is deactivated, it will appear to others on the app that you do not have an account anymore, however.

If permanently deleting your Instagram account is the option you want, click "Delete account." This is a permanent delete that will remove your profile in its entirety—photos, videos, comments, likes and followers—from the platform.

How to delete an Instagram account on a computer browser

To delete your Instagram account from either a mobile browser or computer, visit Instagram's Help Center, then go to Manage Account > Delete Account. You should be logged into the account you wish to delete.

Again, on this page, Instagram will give you several options: Deactivate your account, delete your account, or the option to access or review your Instagram data.

Can I delete just one Instagram account?

Managing multiple Instagram accounts? You may be wondering if you can delete just one of your accounts without that decision affecting the other.

Single login for multiple Instagram accounts no longer exists on the platform in 2022. What that means is, though you used to be able to set up a single login for multiple IG accounts, you can no longer create accounts that way. That being said, you can still use the single login feature if you set it up this way previously.

Still, you can remove previously-added accounts to a single login at any time. Once you delete one of the Instagram accounts from a single login, however, it will be deleted permanently.

In order to remove an account that is linked to a single login from the Instagram app, check out IG's Help Center or tap on your profile picture icon in the bottom right-hand corner. Once looking at your profile, tap the three lines in the top right-hand corner, then click "Settings."

Tap "Login info" then click the three dots next to the Instagram account you want to get rid of. Tap "remove."

Why can't I remove an Instagram account from my phone?

If you are having difficulty removing an Instagram account from the login page of your Instagram app, it may be because of enabled saved login information. Here's how to fix that.

In the Instagram app on your mobile device, tap your profile icon, then tap the three lines in the top right. (You'll want to make sure you're logged into the exact profile you want to remove from your phone.) Tap "settings," then go to "security," then "saved login info." You'll notice a slider bar to the right. Toggle that slider bar off and a "Remove account" popup will appear.

How do you deactivate an account on Instagram?

If you've gotten this far, then you probably have already seen the prompts for deactivating your Instagram account. Once in your settings, go to "account," then "Delete account." Once you click "Delete account," Instagram will give you the option to deactivate first.

Deactivating your Instagram account is a little different from deleting it altogether. Deactivation only lasts as long as you do not log in to your IG account. The second you log back in, your account is no long deactivated. Deleting your Instagram account, however, is completely permanent.
