Sayreville woman killed, husband seriously injured in Old Bridge motorcycle crash

A 53-year-old woman died Sunday after she and her husband were ejected from their motorcycle in a crash in the area of routes 9 and 18 in Old Bridge, police said Tuesday.

The woman, who died at Hackensack Meridian Health Old Bridge Medical Center, was not identified by Old Bridge police. The man, who was driving the Harley Davidson motorcycle, suffered significant injuries in the crash and was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, police said.

A GoFundMe page identified the woman as Andrea Houlihan of Sayreville, and the driver of the motorcycle as her husband.

Police responded around 11 a.m. Sunday to northbound Route 9 and Route 18 on a report of a crash where arriving officers found a collision between a GMC SUV and the motorcycle.

An investigation indicates a vehicle was traveling on the exit ramp from northbound Route 9 onto northbound Route 18 when it suddenly crossed over the painted median and back onto Route 9 into traffic, which caused cars on Route 9 to abruptly stop on the highway. The motorcycle, however, was unable to stop and struck the rear of the SUV, causing the motorcycle driver and passenger to be ejected, police said.

The vehicle that cut across the painted median fled the scene, police said.

The GoFundMe page created by Jonida Lagii of Manalapan is looking to raise $20,000 toward the Houlihan family's funeral and medical expenses. As of Tuesday afternoon, more than $11,000 had been raised by nearly 200 donors.

"On 08/13/2023 our friend Jessica Houlihan lost her mother Andrea Houlihan in a tragic accident on Route 9. Her father was severely injured and in critical condition, fighting for his life at the hospital," the post states. "We are reaching out to friends and family and asking for their support in helping our friend Jessica and her brothers during these difficult times. No child should go through this pain and financial difficulty at this young age. Please find in it your heart to donate in Andrea's memory and support as much as you can to help her children in getting through these very painful times."

The crash investigation is continuing. Anyone with information or surveillance footage is asked to call Traffic Officer Steven Connolly of the Old Bridge Police Department at 732-721-5600 ext. 3821.
