Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) operatives uncovered a collaborator who was spying on Ukrainian military ships near the Mykolaiv port, SBU reported on Telegram on Feb. 22.

The individual was set to disclose the locations of Ukrainian defense force ground units, including some involved in combat operations on the left bank of the Kherson Oblast. The primary targets were Ukrainian military ships and their sea and river routes.

The apprehension of the collaborator helped secure the locations of Ukrainian military units and prevented the Russians from utilizing intelligence they had gathered to carry out missile and drone attacks on the frontline in southern Ukraine.

The Russian agent was a local resident who had been cooperating with the Russians since at least early 2024. He had repeatedly expressed support for Russian aggression in his writings, which caught the attention of Russian special services, the SBU reported.

SBU investigators notified the suspect that he has been charged with violating Part 3 of Article 114-2 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which prohibits unauthorized dissemination of information about the movements of weapons, troops, or military deployments during wartime.

He faces up to 12 years in prison.
