Ukraine’s SBU security service has pressed charges against Russian propagandist Sergei Mardan, who called for the genocide and repression of Ukrainians, the SBU press service reported on July 1.

He faces up to eight years in prison if convicted.

Mardan (real name Klyuchenkov) is a leading blogger for the Russian publication Komsomolskaya Pravda and often participates in talk shows on the Solovyov LIVE TV channel — a major Russian propaganda source.

Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Mardan has publicly supported Russian aggression and justified the war crimes of the Russian forces.

According to the SBU, the suspect advocated for widespread reprisals against Ukraine's civilian population.

In one of his live broadcasts, he proposed establishing concentration camps for residents of temporarily occupied territories who resist Russian occupation forces.

Based on the evidence collected, SBU investigators charged Mardan under three articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

P. 2 of Art. 109 (public calls for violent change or overthrow of the constitutional order or seizure of state power, as well as distribution of materials calling for such actions);

P. 3, Art. 436-2 (justification, recognition as lawful, denial of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, which began in 2014, as well as production and dissemination of such materials using the media);

P. 2, Art. 442 (public calls for genocide, as well as the production of materials calling for genocide with the intent to disseminate them or the distribution of such materials).

Since the defendant is currently in Russia, comprehensive measures are being taken to bring him to justice for his crimes against Ukraine.
