One South Carolina city made HGTV’s list of best small towns to retire in — Greenville.

HGTV looked at cities across the country, comparing cost of living, affordable housing, public safety, quality healthcare and low tax rates as well as places that had lots of things to do, including the arts, sporting events and bike trails.

They selected 20 cities. While the cities were not ranked, Greenville was listed first. They mentioned Greemville’s location in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Greenville offers a captivating mix of natural beauty and Southern charm,” the television channel said.

They also praised Greenville’s mild climate, low cost of living, restaurants and hiking and biking trails. HGTV mentioned bike trails at Paris Mountain State Park, but not the Swamp Rabbit Trail, a 20-plus mile walk and bike trail along an abandoned railroad bed.

“The centerpiece of Greenville is Falls Park on the Reedy, a 26-acre urban oasis that boasts a waterfall, dog-friendly paths and a 345-foot-long pedestrian footbridge,” HGTV said.

The one restaurant mentioned was Spill the Beans.

Greenville is no stranger to HGTV, having been listed as one of the 50 best cities to live in, coming in at No. 31. Myrtle Beach was 18.

Greenville was also called one of 30 most charming downtowns.
