SC highway bridge remains closed over Catawba River during search for missing man

VAN WYCK, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A highway is closed over the Catawba River Monday evening as first responders search for a missing man.

According to Lancaster County officials, S.C. 5 is closed at the river, which is on the York-Lancaster County line.

Just before 5:30 p.m. on February 5, emergency personnel say they were called to the area for reports of a man jumping into the river.

Officials say the man drove a white van from the York County side and parked the vehicle on the bridge before jumping.

Numerous crews from both York and Lancaster counties are participating in the search. The public is asked to avoid the area as the search is active on and around the bridge.

Drivers are asked to divert their route to S.C. 9, U.S. 521 or U.S. 21.

The area will remain closed for several hours.
