SC highway emergency response worker struck by vehicle on I-85 in Spartanburg County
A state emergency response worker was struck by a vehicle Wednesday morning along Interstate 85 near Exit 75 in Spartanburg County, the Highway Patrol said.
Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway said the crash happened about 7:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes near the exit, which is the Highway 9 exit for Boiling Springs.
The State Highway Emergency Program worker was standing outside of a vehicle was taken to Spartanburg Medical Center after being struck. The worker's condition was not immediately known, according to Ridgeway.
The State Highway Emergency Program (SHEP) is operated by the S.C. Department of Transportation and assists motorists whose vehicles have mechanical problems and provides assistance to emergency response teams.
S.C. DOT spokesman Pete Poore declined to comment on the crash Wednesday afternoon.
Ridgeway said the S.C. Department of Public Safety's Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating the crash.
The identity of the crash victim was withheld. Ridgeway said further details will not be released until the MAIT team completes its investigation.
