SC has one of the best cities to visit by train, Southern Living says. Take a look

Flying, stressful.

Driving, boring.

Southern Living has the answer for your next getaway — trains.

And they have a list of nine stops to make in the South.

One is in South Carolina. You guessed it. Charleston, even if the train station is in North Charleston, 8 miles from where you really want to be — downtown.

The magazine says, no bother. Uber, Lyft or a regular old taxi will come to your rescue.

Charleston was listed as No. 6 on the city railroad list. No. 1 was Winter Park, Florida, described as “a beloved getaway destination for Floridians.”

And the train station is in Central Park surrounded by Winter Park’s downtown, which the magazine calls “inviting.”

Another interesting pick for Southern Living is No. 3, Laurel, Mississippi, home of HGTV’s show Home Town, in which Ben and Erin Napier returned to their hometown with the intention of renovating as many of the old houses as they can. They’ve managed through seven seasons and still appear to like each other.

“Today, this slice of Americana boasts beautifully restored brick storefronts, exquisite restaurants, and many homegrown businesses, including Laurel Mercantile Co., a home goods shop operated by the Napiers,” Southern LIving said.

Money magazine earlier this year put Laurel on its list of worst places in Mississippi due to high crime and unemployment.

Again, the train station is downtown and it’s a historic place, too, having been built in 1913. Trains and the station are regular features on Home Town.

But, about Charleston.

Southern Living has joined the club of magazines that have put Charleston on best of lists time and time again, such as Forbes, New York Times, Conde Nast and Travel + Leisure.

Here’s how Southern Living described Charleston this time.

“A Lowcountry favorite of foodies and history buffs, Charleston offers unparalleled romance and Southern charm.”

The magazine mentions cobblestone streets and historic houses, including Rainbow Row on East Bay Street.

“Dine on fresh seafood in restaurants across the city’s walkable lower peninsula,” the article said.

Hotels they recommend are The Charleston Place, Hotel Bennett, The Dewberry and The Restoration.

Also recommended at Gadsden’s Wharf, the International African American Museum, which they call “one of the nation’s most significant cultural institutions.”

Southern Living makes train travel sound downright luxurious.

“You spend the hours leisurely reading a new book, enjoying the view of rolling hills and glittering lakes, and savoring a delicious meal in the dining car. You stretch your legs often,” Southern Living writes.

Other cities Southern Living recommended were No. 2 Alexandria, Virginia; No. 4 Harpers Ferry, West Virginia; 6 Savannah, Georgia; 7 New Orleans, Louisiana; 8 Memphis, Tennessee and 9 Dallas, Texas.
