SC has one of the most feared, but scenic, highways in the US, new ranking shows

Are highways a part of your daily commute?

If so, you might be traveling on one of the most feared highways in the nation.

Those traveling through South Carolina may also have to take the journey on this highway to reach their destination.

Recently, Gunther Mitsubishi commissioned QuestionPro to run a survey of 3,000 regular road trippers and asked them to rank which routes in each state that they fear breaking down on the most.

Highway 28 in South Carolina made the list.

South Carolina Highway 28 is a primary state highway that traverses east–west from Georgia, near Mountain Rest, to Beech Island in South Carolina. This stretch of highway is a continuous highway but is separated by a 17.5-mile stretch through Augusta, Georgia, according to Roadnow.

Although the highway made the list as the most dangerous in the state and one of the 50 most feared routes for risky road trips, luckily, for those that use the highway regularly, it wasn’t ranked very high comparatively.

South Carolina’s Highway 28 was ranked only as the 48th most feared road trip in the country.

The survey revealed that summer weather conditions could intensify the risks on this route as the Palmetto State experiences high temperatures and humidity during this season, which can make waiting for assistance in a non-functional vehicle uncomfortable and potentially hazardous, Gunther Mitsubishi states.

“Moreover, the region is prone to severe thunderstorms, which can bring heavy rain, reduced visibility, and hazardous driving conditions. Being stranded on the side of the road during such weather events increases the risk of accidents and decreases the chances of timely assistance,” the company continued.

According to the survey, the 10 most feared state’s roadways that amount for a risky road trip include:

  1. New Mexico: US Route 285

  2. California: Death Valley Road (SR-190)

  3. Texas: US Route 90

  4. Hawaii: Saddle Road (Hawaii Route 200)

  5. Nevada: US Route 50 (Loneliest Road in America)

  6. Kentucky: Mountain Parkway (KY-9002)

  7. South Dakota: US Route 14A (Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway)

  8. Alaska: Dalton Highway (AK-11)

  9. New York: State Route 17

  10. Mississippi: US Route 49

Despite South Carolina’s Highway 28 being selected as the most risky to utilize in the state, traveling on the roadway isn’t all doom and gloom.

The Lake Hartwell Country website lists the highway as one of four of the most scenic in the surrounding area.

“Highway 28 weaves its way from the sprawling farmland of Anderson County through the mountains of Oconee County. There are several opportunities along the way to see a waterfall or explore one of the small towns of Lake Hartwell Country,” the site states.
