SC police add charges for man shot by officers after armed bank robbery in Rock Hill

A Pennsylvania man shot by Rock Hill Police after a November armed bank robbery now faces more criminal charges, South Carolina officials said.

David Herbert Massie, 45, was shot in the hand when Rock Hill Police Department officers found him on a bicycle near the intersection of Herlong Avenue and Ebenezer Road after the Nov. 20 bank robbery on India Hook Road, officials said.

On Monday, the State Law Enforcement Division said it charged Massie with pointing and presenting a weapon and resisting arrest with a deadly weapon, according to warrants obtained by The Herald. Rock Hill Police said Nov. 20 Massie showed a gun to officers before he was shot.

Massie allegedly used a gun during the bank robbery and fled with an undisclosed amount of money before he was confronted afterward by officers, police said in a statement Nov. 20.

Rock Hill Police asked SLED to investigate shooting

Because of the shooting, Rock Hill Police requested SLED conduct an outside investigation.

In the new warrants, SLED alleges Massie pulled a gun on two officers and refused their commands after he was confronted by police who were searching for a bank robbery suspect.

“RHPD officers attempted to make contact with Massie, who matched the description of an armed robbery suspect,” a warrant states. “Massie pulled a firearm and defied officers verbal commands to drop the weapon. Massie was subsequently shot by officers. As Massie was handcuffed, he pulled an edged weapon from his waistband.”

The officers involved in the shooting have not been identified by either the police department or SLED. The warrants released by SLED blacked out the names of the officers.

What happens now?

Massie has not been convicted of any crime in connection with the November incident.

Court records and arrest warrants in the cases show Massie is from Pittsburgh. Officials have not released information about why Massie was in Rock Hill at the time of the incident in November.

He was previously charged by Rock Hill Police with armed robbery and possession of weapon during a violent crime, court and jail records show.

York County Prosecutors from the 16th Circuit Solicitor’s Office are expected to prosecute Massie, SLED said in a statement.

Court records do not show any trial dates. Massie remains in the York County jail without bond.
