This SC restaurant ranks among nation’s best new dining spots. Why fans love it

A South Carolina restaurant recently opened its doors — and already has fans craving its food.

So much so, the North Charleston spot now ranks among the “Top 25 Best New Restaurants of 2023,” according to results published Wednesday, Nov. 29.

The Korean barbecue and hotpot restaurant Burnin 99 made it onto the list after the review website Yelp studied businesses that have launched across the United States since January 2022.

To create its rankings, Yelp said it considered “a number of factors including the total volume and ratings of reviews” that customers left through Aug. 7, 2023. The website also turned to a dining trend expert to help determine the top new restaurants.

What makes Burnin 99 rank high?

Burnin 99 landed in the No. 23 spot, becoming the only place in South Carolina to rank among the nation’s favorites. Though Burnin 99 has three locations across the state, Yelp’s recognition went to the one in North Charleston.

Since the location opened in July 2022, fans have taken to Yelp to rave about the bulgogi, a Korean dish traditionally made of thin pieces of marinated meat. Others praised the variety of selections for hotpot, a dining experience in which customers can add vegetables and other ingredients to a bubbling broth.

“We offer 6 choices of hot pot broths, which serve as perfect soup bases for 45 different kinds of fresh (vegetables) and meat,” the restaurant wrote on its website, adding that a variety of sauces also are on the menu.

On Yelp, customers also couldn’t get enough of Burnin 99’s all-you-can-eat concept, helping it earn more than four out of five stars.

The Charleston area isn’t a stranger to receiving praise for its dining scene, ranking among the best travel destinations for food lovers this year. Within the region, North Charleston made its mark in 2022 when it boasted two of the top-ranked places to eat in the country.

In the latest rankings, the nation’s best new restaurant was Anima by EDO in Las Vegas.
