This SC restaurant serves the best cheeseburger in 2023, Yelp says. Have you tried it?

There likely isn’t a food as quintessentially American as the cheeseburger.

It’s just so perfect, both in its simplicity and potential for complexity. Whether you want your patty grilled or steamed and covered in cheddar, Swiss, American or even pepper jack cheese, it’s hard to go wrong. And do you want to add mustard and onions? How about ketchup and pickles?

It’s all good.

And then there are the burgers that get a bit more exotic, be it by adding multiple patties, a rare type of cheese or even a scoop of macaroni and cheese on top.

But whatever your preference, quality is something to consider too. To help customers find the best, tastiest options, Yelp has compiled a list of the restaurants with the best cheeseburgers in every state in 2023.

Yelp identified businesses in its food and restaurant category with a large concentration of reviews mentioning “cheeseburger,” then ranked those using several factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews.

So, which South Carolina restaurant has the best cheeseburger?

The highest-rated restaurant is Hamburger Joe’s in North Myrtle Beach. The restaurant currently has four out of five stars and 695 reviews on Yelp.

According to the restaurant’s website, Joe Brooks opened the original Hamburger Joe’s opened on Oct. 11, 1989 soon after Hurricane Hugo. Brooks wanted to offer casual fine dining to beach and golf enthusiasts. There is also a second location in Surfside Beach.

There are no fancy gourmet or exotic cheeseburger menu options at Hamburger Joe’s. Instead, just simple ‘cheeseburger’ is what’s listed on the sandwich section of the menu, along with a few other choices, such as hot dog, grilled chicken breast sandwich and fried bologna.

But while the menu options might be simple, the tastes are anything but basic, according to many Yelp reviewers.

Karen K. of Alexandria, Va. wrote on Sept. 4 that she wished she could give the restaurant 10 stars.

“Simple menu done to perfection,” she wrote. “Recommended to get the cheeseburger all the way, and hot dog all the way with a side of onion.”

Hannah F. of Winston-Salem, NC wrote on Aug. 27 that she tried Hamburger Joe’s on a whim on a Saturday night and the place was packed.

“I ordered a cheeseburger with bacon and a side of fries,” she wrote. “I enjoyed the burger itself as it was cooked on the flattop and perfectly crisp on the outside while remaining juicy on the inside.”
