SC Times Sports Report: Regular season rolls with records set and lost

Greetings sports fans!

We've arrived at May! That means high school sports are now in the crucial weeks of the regular season, quickly approaching section tournaments at the end of the month.

Some teams have gotten off to terrific starts, including Sartell/Sauk Rapids-Rice boys lacrosse (5-0), Sartell softball (8-2), ROCORI baseball (5-1) and Cathedral softball (7-1). The next few weeks will determine if they can lock up top seeds for sections.

Some college sports have already begun their postseasons, including College of St. Benedict softball hosting Gustavus in the MIAC quarterfinals Thursday night.

A few other college notables:

St. Cloud State baseball saw their nation-leading 18-game win streak end with a 2-1 loss at the University of Mary on Wednesday night.

St. Cloud Technical & Community College softball swept a top-10 matchup with Anoka-Ramsey on Tuesday, putting them in prime position to clinch a division title this weekend and host the regional in Waite Park.

College of St. Benedict sophomore Fiona Smith finished fifth in the 1600m at the Drake Relays last Thursday, posting the sixth-fastest time in Division III history (16:16.54).

Number of the Week: 155

Former ROCORI lineman Matt Waletzko was taken with the 155th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft on Saturday, selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round.

Most mock drafts expected Waletzko to be selected around the fifth or sixth round. The four-year North Dakota starter becomes the second ROCORI player to be selected in an NFL Draft.
