SCAA Hoops: Pittsford's Ava Mallar sets new school record in win over St. Phillip

PITTSFORD — Head coach Aaron Davis and the Pittsford Wildcats hosted the Battle Creek St. Phillip girls basketball team for an SCAA showdown in Pittsford. The game resulted in a high scoring battle, with Pittsford taking a comfortable lead and finishing the night with 67 total points.

The 67-44 victory earned the Wildcats their 13th win of the season. In their pursuit of their 13th win, a new Wildcat school record was set. Sophomore Ava Mallar has led the Wildcats in scoring most of the season. Mallar set a new school record for most points in a single game with 36. Mallar also finished the game with a double-double, grabbing 11 rebounds and having four assists and seven steals.

The previous record was 34 points, which was first achieved in 1990. The record had been tied two previous times in 2009 and 2010. Also scoring for the Wildcats was Riley McCumber who had eight points, including two 3-pointers, and six rebounds. Halle Clark had six points,  12 rebounds and two steals.

The Wildcats look to earn their 14th victory of the season in a road trip at Bellevue on Feb. 7. They will rematch with Hillsdale Academy on their home court on Feb. 9.

Hillsdale Academy 61 - Litchfield 18

The Academy Colts extended their winning streak to six games as they defeated the Litchfield Terriers in a 61-18 final. It was their 13th win of the season. The Colts have only lost one conference game this season, against Pittsford on Jan. 13. Their other loss came at the hands of the Reading Rangers during the Pat Paterson tournament.

Senior Megan Roberts had 24 points, nine steals and six rebounds for the Colts. Lydia Jackson and Iris Millies each had 13 points. The Colts open up their next week of games with a road trip to Battle Creek St. Phillip. The game will be played on Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m.

The Colts will then look to get revenge on the Pittsford Wildcats. Pittsford pulled away for a 47-31 victory back in January. Both teams have faced tough challenges since that matchup. Hillsdale Academy beat Hillsdale 31-30. Pittsford dropped a game to the Colon Magi in a 46-50 final. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.

Camden-Frontier 28 - Tekonsha 13

The Camden-Frontier girls basketball team rebounded on Thursday night to defeat their rivals Tekonsha on their homecourt in a low scoring 28-13 final. Lexus Sigler had 15 points for Camden-Frontier. June Best had 11 points for Camden-Frontier.

In addition to their win this week, the team won their second athlete of the week award this season. Averil Miller was named the week seven athlete of the week for helping Camden-Frontier defeat Climax-Scotts. June Best was the other winner for the team this season. They are one of the only teams to have multiple winners this season, so far.

Camden-Frontier is now 7-7 overall. They do not play again until Feb. 7 against Athens High School. The home game starts at 7:30 p.m.

Pittsford 59 - Burr Oak 48

Head coach Mike Burger and the Pittsford varsity boys basketball team won their 11th game of the season after defeating the Burr Oak Bobcats in a 59-48 final. The Wildcats had their hands full all night against the Bobcats. The Wildcats hit four 3-pointers to help keep them ahead during the matchup.

Bryce Williams had seven points for the Wildcats. Mason Payne had 10 points, with eight of them coming in the fourth quarter. Payne has seen similar fourth quarter numbers throughout the season, as the junior has become a reliable asset for the team in the second half of games.

Gavyn Carden continued his recent shooting success. Carden had 15 points, including a dagger from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter. Legend Gore had five points for the Wildcats. Kade Spahr had 14 points, including two 3-pointers. Gage gore had one point. Pat VanDusen had seven points.

The Wildcats look to continue their win streak with a game against St. Phillip on the road. The Feb. 3 matchup will have scores and stats included in the Tuesday print edition of the Hillsdale Daily News.
