Scam caller claims to be police, says you skipped jury duty and owe fee. Don’t believe it
Someone is calling and texting Butler County residents impersonating a law enforcement officer and attempting to scam them out of money.
“We have had several reports of a male calling Butler County residents, claiming to be a Sgt. McKenzie, and telling them they have missed jury duty and to click a link that he forwards to them via text message to pay a fee,” Butler County Undersheriff Daimon Cundiff said in an email.
The perpetrator has been calling and texting from 316-409-1922, Cundiff said. The sheriff’s office has received 5 to 10 reports daily since Monday from people who have received the calls.
Luckily, no one has fallen for the phone scam, Cundiff said. A few people, including the sheriff’s office, have tried calling the number but immediately got hung up on.
“We would like to remind people that we don’t ever ask for money or credit/debit card numbers over the phone, and to not give out personal information over the phone,” Cundiff said.
