A woman and her fiancé live right behind the mobile home where Clark County Deputy Matthew Yates, a 15-year veteran of the force, was shot Sunday morning.

“At first I thought it was fireworks, but there were more rounds after that,” said Kayla Morris.

The gunfire forced Morris, her fiancé Eric Greer and their two young children to take cover in their home.

“It was scary. We saw the SWAT team laying in our front yard,” Greer said.

“The police were using our car as shields, but I’d rather they do that than be hit,” Morris said.

The family moved to a backroom, but still felt too close to the chaos.

”We watched the truck ram through the house. They started to light it up. Tear gassing it. Guy didn’t come out. We watched it catch fire,” Morris said.

Morris and Greer knew their 16-month old likely wouldn’t remember what happened but told News Center 7 their six-year-old son had a lot of questions.

“I didn’t want to lie to him. I told him there were a lot of police out there, and I think they’re looking for a bad guy and we’re not going to leave the house until it’s clear. That’s what he did. He stayed in the back room and stayed low,” Morris said.

The family told News Center 7 they’ve lived in Harmony Estates Mobile Home Park for three years without any problems. They say this experience scared them, changed them and forced them to talk with their son about things they hope at his age he can handle.

“It makes me worry how it will affect him later for sure. because he was scared,” Morris said.

Morris said she thinks her son will have more questions when he sees the mobile home. She said she’ll continue to talk with him the best she can.
