SCC baseball team opens Region XI tourney with victory over Iowa Central

A three-run fifth inning gave Southeastern Community College the lead and the Blackhawks pushed on for a 7-3 win over Iowa Central in the first round of the Region XI, Division II baseball tournament at Cedar Rapids Thursday.

The fourth-seeded Blackhawks (38-19) will face top-seed Kirkwood at 2 p.m. Friday in Cedar Rapids. In the regular season, SCC won two of three games against Kirkwood.

Thursday, SCC's Noel McGarry-Doyle went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Nick Banowetz went 2-for-4 and Cole Yearsley homered. Yearsley and Jose Sallorin each had two RBIs.

Casey Perrenoud (3-2) was the winning pitcher. He gave up two earned runs on seven hits and a walk in seven innings. He struck out three. Reece Wissinger pitched the final two innings for his eighth save. He surrendered one earned run on two hits and a walk while fanning three.,

Caleb Corbin, Brock Johnson and Nick Baker each had two hits for Iowa Central. Baker homered and Johnson doubled. Brett Sears (11-3) was the losing pitcher.

In other games Thursday, Des Moines Area Community College beat Northeast, 8-2, in the winners bracket, Northeast then ousted Iowa Central, 6-3, in the losers bracket.

Third-seeded DMACC will play No. 2 North Iowa Area at 11 a.m. Friday.

PREP SOFTBALL

WEST CENTRAL 2-10, RIDGEWOOD 7-3: West Central's Shelby Bowman singled, doubled and drove in four runs to lead the Heat to victory over Ridgewood in the second game of a doubleheader at Stronghurst, Illinois, after Ridgewood won the first game.

Winning pitcher Addie Seitz also had two hits with a double in the second game for West Central. Bailey Ryan, Bailie Ferguson and Ashley Meyer each doubled. Addie Seitz gave up three earned runs on six hits and two walks in seven innings. She struck out three. Two of the hits she surrendered were home runs by Gabby Dean and Mya Brown.

In the first game, Dean and Hailey Casteel each homered to power Ridgewood to the win. Casteel, the winning pitcher, struck out 11 Heat in five innings.

West Central was limited to four hits, two by MacKenzy Ludington. Addie Seitz and Ludington each doubled. Seitz was the losing pitcher.

WEST HANCOCK 6, PAYSON 2: Lauren Carr, Paige Wasielewski and Lillie Woodworth each had two hits to lead the Titans past Payson at West Hancock.

Woodworth hit a triple and Jenna Ferguson doubled. Jordan Cllimer was the winning pitcher, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks in seven innings. She struck out eight. Climer threw 93 pitches, 62 in the strike zone,

For Payson, Thea Koehler tripled and Kylie Simmons doubled.

MERCER COUNTY 3-7, A-W 6-3: The Golden Eagles split a doubleheader with Annawan-Wethersfield at Kewanee, Illlinois.

In the first game, Mercer County's Riley King went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Hallie Schreurs doubled.

In the second game, Schreurs and Madi Frieden both went 3-for-4 for Mercer County. Frieden scored three runs and Schreurs scored twice. Frieden hit two doubles and Schreurs had one.

Schreurs was the winning pitcher, giving up one earned run on three hits and a walk while striking out six in seven innings.

PREP BASEBALL

SOUTHEASTERN 6, ILLINI WEST 4: Southeastern scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on for a win over the Chargers at Augusta, Illinois.

Danny Stephens, Mason Fry and Cade Rigg had three hits each for Southestern. Illini West's Bradyn Robertson led the hit parade with three hits in three trips. The Chargers' Tanner Freeman went 2-for-2. Ethan James homered and Drew Dooley doubled.

GIRLS SOCCER

DAVENPORT NORTH 1, FORT MADISON 0: Davenport North scored its goal with five minutes left to play and blanked the Bloodhounds at Fort Madison's Baxter Athletic Complex.

Fort Madison managed just four shots on goal, two by Natalie Randolph and one each by Alana Simpson and Anna Sobczak. Bloodhound goalkeeper Taylor Johnson had 12 saves.

"We played really well," Fort Madison coach Carrie Burken said, "especially since it's our third game this week in the extreme heat. We did a really good job connecting passes."

MOUNT PLEASANT 9, WEST BRANCH 0: The Panthers coasted to a shutout victory at East Lake Park in Mount Pleasant.

Elly Manning scored three goals and had three assists for the Panthers. Charice Auwerda added two goals and an assist. Andrea Lopreato scored three goals and assisted on two others, Abby West scored a goal, while Troi Wilson and Mattisyn Wenke each had an assist.

Leslie Lopez had five saves for the Panthers, while Evelyn Escobar had one save and Ale Figueroa-Garcia had a pair of saves.

Now 8-5, Mount Pleasant hosts Notre Dame-West Burlington/Danville on Monday.
