SCC loses, then wins in Region XI baseball tournament

A six-run first inning propelled Southeastern Community College to a 9-4 win over Northeast in a Region XI losers bracket baseball game at Cedar Rapids Friday night.

The Blackhawks (39-20) advance to Saturday's 11 a.m. game against North Iowa Area (34-18). Northeast ended its season at 39-19.

Northeast went up 2-0 in the first half-inning, but SCC responded with a six-spot and never trailed again. Cole Yearsley and Noel McGarry-Doyle had two hits each for the Blackhawks. Yearsley and Sam Monroe each doubled and Maxton Polad and Carlos Medina both homered for the Blackhawks.

Polad and Medina finished with three RBIs each and Monroe had two.

Blake Gaskey (9-2) was the winning pitcher. He surrendered four earned runs on six hits and a walk in seven and one-third innings. He struck out four.

Harrison Taubert and Maxim Fullerton both homered for Northeast.

Earlier Friday, top-seeded Kirkwood edged the Blackhawks, 9-8.

Monroe led all hitters with two home runs, two singles and six RBIs in five plate appearances. Polad went 3-for-5 and scored three runs. Andrew Long (8-4) lasted just one complete inning and was tagged for the loss. He gave up four earned runs on five hits and a walk. He struck out one.

Cade Turner (4-1) was the winning pitcher with four innings relief. Joe Simpson led Kirkwood at the plate with a home run, two singles, two runs scored and three RBIs in five trips. Alex Pendergast, Trenton Burkhalter and Parker Shupe each homered for Kirkwood.

BOYS SOCCER

ND-WB 10, HIGHLAND 0: Parker Davis scored three goals and assisted on four others to lead Notre Dame-West Burlington to victory in the Southeast Iowa Superconference tournament at Donnellson.

The Nikes' Gabe Zurita also scored three goals. Cole Ward and Carson Wagner scored two goals each for ND-WB. Freshman Caden Ott had two assists. Wagner, Alexander AbouAssaly and Hunter Lillie each had an assist.

Arya Nowroozi made no saves as the Nike defense didn't allow a shot on goal.

ND-WB improved to 11-3; Highland is 1-11.

HILLCREST 2, CENTRAL LEE 1: Hillcrest Academy edged the Hawks in the SEI Superconference tournament at Donnellson.

Logan Crank scored Central Lee's goal, assisted by Landon Crank and Drake Weber.

Central Lee (5-5) hosts Albia in the Class 1A, Substate 5 quarterfinal at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

BULLDOGS BY FORFEIT: Mediapolis picked up a forfeit victory over Danville-New London in the SEI Superconference tournament.

The Bulldogs improved to 11-4.

COLUMBUS/W-MU 5, WAPELLO 0: The Wildcats blanked the Indians in an SEI Superconference Tournament quarterfinal match at Columbus Junction.

GIRLS GOLF

NEW LONDON WINS REGION: New London's Taylor Phillips was medalist and she led New London to victory in the Class 1A regional tournament at Deerwood golf course.

New London won with 383 strokes. Winfield-Mount Union was second at 446 and Highland was third with 463. All three teams advance to Wednesday's regional final at Diamond Trail Golf Course in Lynnville.

Wapello carded 554. Danville and Holy Trinity didn't have enough players for a team score.

Four New London players finished in the top six individually. Phillips was medalist with an 87. New London's Sophie Malott was second at 92 and Emma Nye of New London was third at 99. Danville's Adrianna Prado was fourth at 100 and New London's Saige Barron and Highland's Adeline Krotz tied for fifth with 105s. All six advance as individuals.

Ava Hagge led Winfield-Mount Union with a 108. Other Wolves were Alli Humphreys (109), Isabelle Kann (110), Afton Wilkerson (119) and Lily Freeman (119).

Liv Fuller led Wapello with a 124. Other Arrows: Olyvia Malone (127), Dakota Griffin (138) and Zarahy Espinosa (165).

Danville's Ava Smith shot 118. For Holy Trinity, Brooke Mueller carded 125 and Laura Mehmert had a 176.

BULLETTES' HINES IS MEDALIST: Mediapolis sophomore Olivia Hines carded a 45-43--88 at Kalona Golf Course for medalist honors in the Class 2A regional tournament.

Host Mid-Prairie won the team championship with a 395, Wilton took second at 438 and Louisa-Muscatine was third with a 449. All three advance to Wednesday's regional final at West Liberty Golf and Country Club.

Hines beat runner-up medalist Ava Barrett's 97 by nine strokes. Barrett is from Wilton.

Advancing to the regional finals as individuals are Hines, Barrett, Mid-Prairie's Madi Davidson (98), Louisa-Muscatine's Madison Bieri (98) and Mid-Prairie's Madelyn Bender (98) and Gabi Robertson (98).

Rounding out Louisa-Muscatine's team score were Jadyn Snyder (112), Kyley Wagler (119) and Victoria Briggs (120).

Mediapolis finished fourth at 449. Following Hines in for the Bullettes were Cami Whitaker (116), Hannah Russell (123) and Taryn Miller (126).

Van Buren County finished sixth with a 512. Playing for the Warriors were Jasmine Padget (122), Keely Duncan (129), Georgia Padget (130) and Zoe Best (131).

Central Lee was seventh at 638. Lady Hawks were: Ellie Herdrich (140), Sydney Gram (145), Taylor Griffin (174) and Mercedes Kirchner (179).

BOYS TENNIS

OTTUMWA 5, BURLINGTON 1: The Bulldogs ousted Burlington in the Class 2A team substate semifinal at Ottumwa.

Burlington's lone match win came from Shaye Stringer at No. 6 singles. Stringer defeated Blake Myers, 6-6 (7-4), 6-4.

In other matches: Toby Schmidt (O) def. Tyce Berthlshofer, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5; Trey Hull (O) def. Hunter Ford, 6-4, 6-1; Quinn Hull (O) def. Jack Carlson, 6-2; Jarrett Wellings (O) def. Mason Rachowicz, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2; and Logan Storto (O) def. Owen Fawcett, 6-3, 6-4.

PREP SOFTBALL

WEST CENTRAL 13-6, MERCER COUNTY 4-3: Addie Seitz pitched both West Central victories and went 4-for-8 at the plate at Aledo, Illinois.

In the first game, Seitz, Shelby Bowman and Allie Strack had three hits each for the Heat. MacKenzy Ludington went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and five RBIs. Seitz gave up one earned run on five hits and a walk in seven innings. She struck out five.

Riley King homered for Mercer County. Gabriella McPeek was the losing pitcher. She gave up eight runs in 3 1/3 innings, but only three were earned.

In the second game, Ludington and Bailey Ryan each had three hits for West Central. Bowman went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Seitz picked up the win, giving up two earned runs on nine hits and two walks in seven innings. She fanned seven.

Ava Ruggles led Mercer County at the plate with a 3-for-4 outing. Madi Frieden was 2-for-3.
