Schitt's Creek star Emily Hampshire has issued an apology over her "insensitive" Halloween costume.

The actress, who played Stevie Budd on the hit sitcom, posted and then deleted photos of herself and a friend dressed up as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard for Halloween to social media.

The costumes were quick to spark backlash online as social media users accused Hampshire of mocking abuse, given the highly-publicised Depp v Heard court battle over accusations of domestic abuse that Heard alleged took place during their relationship.

Depp has always vehemently denied allegations of domestic abuse and in 2022 won a defamation trial against Heard in the US and was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages.

In 2020 in the UK, Depp lost the defamation case he brought against The Sun, after the newspaper had published an article referring to Depp as a "wife beater".

Taking to Instagram to address the backlash over her Halloween costume on Wednesday (November 1), Hampshire wrote: "I want to address what is one of the most thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant things I’ve ever done.

"For Halloween, I stupidly thought it would be funny to dress as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe.

"Domestic abuse is never, ever funny. These are real issues with real people and I REALLY regret my actions. In the future, I will do better. I’m so sorry."

Hampshire was recently seen in Hulu's horror-comedy Appendage, which follows a woman whose inner thoughts materialise into a monstrous creature that threatens to upend her life.

She's next set to star in Caitlin Cronenberg's directorial feature debut Humane, an environmental thriller that takes place several months after a future disaster, causing world leaders to take drastic action by decreasing the global population.

Elsewhere, Hampshire will reprise her role as Rose Mason in the second season of Prime Video series The Rig, which began filming in Scotland earlier this year.

Schitt's Creek is available to watch in its entirety on Netflix.
