Consisting of 10 episodes, the comedy will follow the effect a mystifying machine has on a small Louisiana town when it appears one day in the grocery store – promising to reveal each resident's true potential.

O'Dowd, who's carved himself a successful career in Hollywood since the aforementioned cult hit wrapped up eight years ago, is onboard as Dusty.

This character is described as "a good-natured teacher and family man whose deeply average life has followed a safe and predictable path".

What wonders will the machine share with him?

Circling back round to Schitt's Creek, the six-season sitcom that ended last year, co-creator and star Dan Levy previously addressed the possibility of a big screen spin-off.

"We had such a great time making the show and I think if the idea is right, I would love to explore what a movie could look like. But, I don't have that idea yet. I'm still searching for it.

"My fingers are crossed," he went on to add. "But I also think you need to give people a little time to miss you. So, I'm taking some time and we'll see what happens in the next couple of years, but my fingers are tightly crossed."

Hurry up, time!

Schitt's Creek is streaming in its entirety on Netflix UK.
