MONROE — The Irmgard Gertrude Novak Memorial Scholarship has been established by the Community Foundation of Monroe County.

Endowed by Henry and Andrea Werner, the scholarship honors the legacy of Novak, who was known for her belief in education. The scholarship is designed to support outstanding achievements among Monroe High School students.

"In creating the Irmgard Gertrude Novak Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund, we pay homage to a remarkable woman whose life exemplified courage, resilience and resolute faith in the power of education," Andrea Werner said. Novak's journey began at age 17, when she left East Germany during World War II. A decade later, she married American military man Andrew Novak, settling in the U.S. in 1960 and raising nine children.

"Gert's commitment to education remained steadfast, earning her high school diploma at Monroe High School and reflecting a lifelong passion for learning," the Community Foundation said in a news release.

Novak was involved in Trinity Lutheran Church, the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and other service organizations.

"Her adventurous spirit extended to pursuits, such as travel, snow skiing into her 80s, white-water rafting, rollerblading and local bowling leagues," the Community Foundation said.
