Jun. 18—The following area students won National Merit Scholarships this year. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study:

Judah I. Sotomayor, Douglassville, Liberty University, Lynchburg, Va.; Jack D. Peacock, Lower Heidelberg Township, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa; Sidharth Senthilvel, Spring Township, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind. Sotomayor was home-schooled. Peacock and Senthilvel attended Wilson High School.

World Affairs Council

The following students shared $4,500 in scholarship funds awarded by the World Affairs Council of Greater Reading in memory of Alan Miller, a longtime council board member:

Amish Jindal, Wilson High School, received a $2,000 scholarship. He plans to study international business and economics at the Villanova University Honors Program.

Lauren Goldman, Twin Valley, won a $1,500 scholarship toward an international relations program with a minor in German at the College of William and Mary and the University of St. Andrews.

Zachary Kleinfelter, Exeter, received a $1,000 scholarship. He will attend Elizabethtown College to study political science.

Applications from Berks County seniors planning to pursue international studies, political science, public administration or other related global studies are evaluated by the council's scholarship committee.

Highlands awards

The Highlands at Wyomissing's resident-led Scholarship Committee presented $1,000 scholarships to 15 employees seeking to advance their careers:

Alysa Walker, Clarks Summit University; Ava Gerace. West Chester University; Christal Paez and Melanie Sanchez, Alvernia University; Justin Savage, Leadership Berks; Nautica Bourland, Albright College; Peter Cinelli and Kassandra Rodriguez, Penn State University; Zoe Perella, St. Joseph's University; Alyse Moore. Excelsior College; Bandu Kamara, Karina Tomala and Autumn Weller, Reading Area Community College; Elijah LaPrince, Gratz College; Ashleigh Vogt, Leadership in Wellness Management Certification.
