Scholastic Superstar Kylie Merring

May 27—School: Western Wayne High School

Parents: Jacqueline and Ronald Merring

Plans: Attend the University of Scranton for mathematics and then enroll in an accelerated master's degree program for health administration.

From the school: "The student is the highest academic achieving student attending her high school. She has the top ranking in her class by a significant margin. The student has also had to overcome incredible personal obstacles including the loss of three close relatives within a short period of time. The loss of her father had a profound impact on her personal life, but it had no impact on her school/community involvement and achievements."

What accomplishments are you most proud of and why?

I am most proud of my various academic achievements including currently ranking 1 out of 123 students, earning the Principal's List Award eight times during my high school career and being awarded the National Rural and Small-Town Recognition Award for Academic Achievement from College Board. I believe these accomplishments highlight the dedication I have towards my academics and education.

What were your most rewarding school or community activities?

FBLA, Scholastic Team and volunteering at the Hamlin Community Library were my most rewarding activities.

Do you have any hobbies?

Hunting, fishing, baking, cooking

What do you see yourself doing and where do you see yourself living in 15 years?

In 15 years, I picture myself living in my childhood home in Lake Ariel, with a career in the health care industry that allows me to help those struggling with some of the hardest times they will ever have to face.

Who do you most admire and why?

I admire my father most because of the strength and knowledge that he had bestowed upon me during the first 17 years of my life. He was always the person I had looked up to as a child because of the kindness he had towards others, and the overall knowledge he was able to share with me. My father is the reason I wish to pursue a career that allows me to help anyone struggling with a difficult time. Although he is no longer able to be here with me on earth, I continue to remember the lessons he had taught me and I will cherish them for the rest of my life.

In a sentence, what is your philosophy of life?

Life doesn't get easier or more forgiving, we get stronger and more resilient.

The most interesting thing about me is ...

My passion for the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.

What advice do you have for younger students?

One piece of advice I have for younger students is to learn how to divide your time to be successful in school without sacrificing precious memories spent with family and friends.

What lessons have you learned from growing up in Northeast Pennsylvania?

Growing up in a small town in Northeast Pennsylvania has allowed me to learn to appreciate and involve myself within the community.
