Scholle farmhouse site in Camarillo prepares for construction

Heavy equipment has begun moving dirt and preparing the foundation for more units in the Springville housing project in Camarillo.

Located on about 43 acres west of Springville Drive near Highway 101, the project will add an additional 159 homes to the overall development.

About 1,200 apartments, townhouses and single family homes have already been built on nearly 174 acres east of Springville Drive.

It is unclear when the new homes will be completed. Developer Lennar, which builds homes across 26 states, did not return multiple emails and phone calls.

An approximately 128-year-old farmhouse will also be incorporated into the project as one of the homes. Known as the Scholle farmhouse, the home is currently on stilts and awaiting transport to its plot in the development about 500 feet away.

The complexity of the project and the heavy rainfall earlier this year pushed back its move to the fall, said Dennis Hardgrave, a project manager representing Rancho (Camarillo) Associates. The farmhouse was originally going to move last summer.

Rancho (Camarillo) Associates bought the Scholle farmhouse, surrounding land and associated structures in 1980. Rancho sold the land to Lennar in 2021 but maintained ownership of the farmhouse and will prepare it for sale, Hardgrave said.

Renovations to the 1,890-square-foot farmhouse will begin once it moves to its permanent location. Several structures, such as a barn and shed, that stood next to the farmhouse have been torn in preparation for the new homes.

Springville was a small farming community situated between what is now Port Hueneme and Camarillo. Edward Henry Scholle built the farmhouse after he purchased farmland in 1895.
