School bus crash in Bel Air South sends 11 children, 2 adults to hospital with minor injuries

Sep. 11—A school bus and a Honda Accord collided at an intersection in Bel Air South Monday morning, sending 11 children and two adults to hospitals, Maryland State Police said.

The driver of the 15-passenger minibus and several children were sent to the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air as a precaution after the collision, police said. The children were wearing seatbelts, and no one was seriously injured, police said.

The driver of the Honda and a 1-year-old child who was a passenger in the car were taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for minor injuries, police said. The crash occurred around 8:10 a.m. at the intersection of Laurel Bush Road and Emmorton Road.

Maryland State Police said 10 children were transported to UMUCH — five by ambulance and five by KinderCare Learning Company bus. However, Michael Schwartzberg, University of Maryland Medical Systems' senior director of media relations, said that only six children were taken to the Bel Air hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

"Most have been treated and already discharged from the hospital," Schwartzberg said Monday afternoon.

A spokesperson from KinderCare's corporate office in Lake Oswego, Oregon, provided a statement Monday afternoon, confirming that the bus was from one of two KinderCare centers in Abingdon. The company provides before- and after-school care for children.

"This morning, students on the Kensington KinderCare bus were in a motor vehicle accident on their way to their elementary school," said Colleen Moran, senior public relations manager for KinderCare Learning Companies. "Thankfully, none of the children sustained serious injuries. However, paramedics advised that all children be transported to the local hospital for evaluation as a precaution. Two children have since returned to our care.

"We would like to thank local law enforcement and emergency personnel for their swift action and response to the call."

According to a preliminary investigation, the bus was traveling north on Emmorton Road and the Honda was headed south. Police said the Honda was attempting to turn left onto Laurel Bush Road, failed to yield the right of way and the bus crashed into the passenger side of the car..

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
